My Visit to Kauai Aadheenam

About ten days back a mother-and-daughter team visited the monastery, both journalists. Akila and her daughter Padma returned home and wrote of their story, in both Tamil and English. We share with you today their experiences. If you know someone who would love a Tamil story, copy and paste the Tamil below.

Divine Journey
"Neither beginning nor end has the Great Light, Iraivan
Elements five, senses five transcend to reach inside, Kadavul"
Them, I saw recently on the island of Kauai. Nature's beauty abounds in the wooded area,
where two amazing temples have been raised by the Kauai Hindu Monastery.
I worshipped my God, our Lord Siva, here at these divine temples – body, life and blood
all melting in devotion. He who abides in Chidambaram, Tamil Nadu as Lord Nataraja is
the main deity here at the Kadavul Temple. We heard that there are temples to Nataraja in
Sri Lanka and Kashmir also. Would limitless devotion and a thousand eyes suffice to
seek and receive a glimpse of the Lord that dances in Bliss?!
The group of islands in the Pacific Ocean is collectively called the Hawaiian Islands. The
50th American state, one of these is called Kauai. The two Hindu temples established here
by the Kauai Hindu Monastery attract large numbers of pilgrims all through the year.
Part of a now inactive volcano, the island holds close the five elements of nature. Set in
the middle of a vast ocean, green forests, clear blue skies, sweet fragrant air fills us with
exhilaration. While touring or simply seeking quiet time does physically refresh anyone
who visits here, the elegance, uniqueness and divinity of the two temples here bring other
benefits, manifold. They are situated 11 miles from the Lihue airport of the island of
Kauai.
The Kadavul Temple and the Iraivan Temple have been founded by the laudable efforts
of the Kauai Hindu Monastery. Satguru Sivaya Subramuniyaswami (1927 – 2001) chose
the island of Kauai and founded the Aadheenam in 1970. As in his vision of Lord Siva,
the Iraivan Temple is now being built, to last a thousand years. The plants, shrubs and
trees around the area have also been so chosen, that will live a thousand years. From
2001, Satguru Bodhinatha Veylanswami presides as the Head of the Aadheenam. Under
his guidance, the 21 Hindu monks skillfully perform the tasks at the temple, according to
the Agamas. In addition, the magazine 'Hinduism Today', the Himalayan Academy and
the Hindu Heritage Endowment are also the responsibilities of the Aadheenam. Keeping
pace with the times, the monks are as well versed at computers, publishing and
communication technology as they are in their spiritual pursuits.
It can be said that there are none among the locals or tourists that do not talk of the two
temples on the 363 acres of the Aadheenam. While in other parts of America, large Hindu
temples are built in the cities, here alone are the temples set amid lush fields and vales,
allowing for daily visits by those who also seek to meet with the Satguru. Those who
wish to know more about the nearby Iraivan Temple and the Aadheenam can inform prior
to their visit, to enable the Aadheenam to arrange a guided tour.
Let us now proceed for darshan of Lord Nataraja at the Kadavul Temple. We seek
blessings and admittance from Lord Ganesha, whom we see first and then walk along the
300' path through the woods. On the way, under a massive banyan tree stands the Sixfaced,
Twelve-armed, Beautiful Lord Murugan. At the entrance to the Temple, sits
Nandideva, Devotee incomparable, gaze fixed steadfast on Siva, weighing 32000 pounds,
set in stone. On entering, we see Kadavul standing tall as Lord Nataraja. At His side, are
shrines to Lord Vinayaga and Lord Murugan. Before the raised platform for the deities, is
a large hall for devotees to gather. The 108 tandava dance postures of Siva, in bronze,
adorn the walls on either side. Inside the temple, on the right shines the golden form of
Gurudeva, who founded this temple in 1973. Devotees gather and in silence observe the
ablutions and ceremonies performed by the Monastery priest, from 9 a.m. to 10:30 a.m.
Sacred ash, vermillon, sandal paste and holy water is offered as sacrements at the
end. From the day this temple was established in 1973, ceremonial pujas are performed
every 3 hours, each day. While the general public is allowed to participate in the puja at
9:00 a.m., those at 12 noon, afternoon 3, 6 p.m., late night 9:00 p.m., at midnight, dawn at
3:00 a.m., and at 6:00 a.m. are performed unerringly by the temple priests. We were filled
with joy on hearing that the pujas were done on time, every day, in any situation, be it
blazing heat, pouring rain, raging storms or furied floods.
As part of the devotion-filled ceremonies, are the recordings of songs from the
'Tirumurai' and the sounds of the nagaswaram, playing in the background. In front of the
idol of Lord Nataraja is a sphatika lingam, single-pointed, of white crystal – 39 inches
tall, 700 pounds in weight, currently being worshipped here, later to be installed at the
Iraivan Temple, coming up nearby.
Now, we move towards activities at the Iraivan Temple site. Outside the Kadavul
Temple, on the northern side is a shrine for the Lord of Palani. We meet the Umbrella
Ganesha first. Nearby is a form I have not seen before, as the King of Music, Vinadhara
Siva. Further along are Palani Murugan, Nataraja, the Narmada Lingam and then
Dakshinamurti. A tall Vel of Muruga is enshrined in a grove. Lord Anjaneya is soon to be
reside here.
Set on a strong foundation, 4' high, 50 meters long, are the white granite entry hall and
main shrine, in a near-complete condition. Designed and executed by Sri. Ganapathi
Sthapathi, all the work here has been done without machinery, using only hand-held
chisels In the middle are 6 beautiful pillars, carved in black granite. Stone chains and
temple bell are to be hung from the ceiling. In the center of the hall, is an intricately
carved stone block, that looks like a carpet has been laid on the floor. On the outer pillars
of the temple are six lions that hold stone balls in their mouth, that the sculptors have
designed such that they can be moved with your fingers placed inside. On every pillar are
so many carvings of sacred figures and plants found in India and Kauai, that this entry
hall appears like a library.
What remains are tasks like the Nandi Mandapam outside, periphery walls along the
temple foundation, the pathway to the temple. At the carving site at Bengaluru, the
following are being readied, soon to arrive here – two 6-feet elephants for the entrance,
11000 pound five-metal base for the Lingam and the Hanuman statue. It is noteworthy
that sacred rudraksha trees grow near the temple.
The crystal lingam, currently being worshipped at Kadavul is to be consecrated here as
the main deity. This lingam that Gurudeva saw in a vision in 1975, was found in
Arkansas and brought here. 50 million years old, it has six faces. Built according to
Agamas, no other deities are to be enshrined in the temple.Lord Siva includes Shakti.
Hari and Siva are One, hence it is significant to worship the Supreme in the form the
Lingam, with the name 'Namasivaya'. Unconfused mind, without wandering thoughts,
unscattered to merge into Him, is that not progress?
Around Iraivan Temple
Most of what is narrated above is what I recently witnessed on my recent visit to Kauai. I
had read publications by the Aadheenam. Additionally, not fully knowing Saiva
Siddhanta or Hindu religious activities, I desired to thoroughly investigate.
I was blessed with meeting Satguru Bodhinatha Veylanswami, Head of the Kauai
Aadheenam. Also, the editor of 'Hinduism Today', Paramacharya Sadasivanatha
Palaniswami understood our eagerness and patiently answered our questions. Many
pieces of information gathered from him, feature in this article. In keeping with the
ancient axiom of 'One Family, One God', the worship is of Siva alone, he said. While
Gurudeva did not specify a date for the completion of temple construction, all that is
happening is in perfect accordance with Siva's Will and the consecration ceremony could
happen within the next few years, he said.
Also, according to Gurudeva's instructions, electricity will not be used in the temple. He
added that many praise the Iraivan Temple of the 21st century as upholding age-old
tradition and being second only to the Big Temple built by the Chola kings of Thanjavur
in the 10th century.
Nearly a 1000 thousand years ago lived the poet-saint Manickavasagar, who amazingly
sang of the Siva temple at Kauai in lines 187-188 of his divine composition 'Potri Tiru
Agaval'.
Suvaithalai meviya kanne potri,
Kuvai pathi malintha kove potri
Salutations to the darling of Suvai thalai,
Salutations to the king who is in kuvaipathi
Swami brought to our notice the poet's ability to see into the future, with his divine vision
to know this great fact and sing of it.
Times may change, scenes may change, concepts may change, imaginations may change.
But, the Lord, who creates and protects us, remains. Saints and sages, who have obtained
His Grace, guide us. Man casts God's form in stone and metal. But, "with His Grace to
worship His Feet" is what we must want. This, the greatest aspiration, should we hold
strong. Philosophers have shown us how to see God with our eyes, to sing of Him with
our mouths, to experience Him eagerly in our minds, whether we have physical health
and material wealth or not. These are related to the material world only. May God bestow
us with His Grace. Live anywhere, nothing wrong with that. Not just in India, but in
many parts of the world, temples have been established and a spiritual path has been laid
for people to walk on. "May all the world be well" – so saying, let us pray for the benefit
of the world.
"Fit to serve in love
Should I prepare,
Bliss shall be obtained by itself, O Supreme!"

Below is the same tale in sweet Tamil language. Actually, the above was translated from this into English...
