The word ‘Pagan’ came up today in The Word of the Day, with a rather incomplete – and thereby misleading – definition.
A Pagan is one who honors nature in all aspects. Some of us celebrate the five elements of air, fire, water, earth and spirit; others only the first four. We see nature as an expression of the Divine, either mono – dual or polytheist. Often we use ritual and magic to connect to the Divine source. We follow a Wheel of the Year, celebrating the changing seasons and lunar moon phases with festivals.
Paganism is a world-wide religion – indeed, it is the oldest living religion, predating Christianity and Buddhism by thousands of years. We enjoy all the aspects of an organized religion: a diverse community of denominations, degreed clergy, schools of divinity, rites of passage and sacred liturgy.
Wicca, a path within Paganism, is recognized as a religion by The World Parliament of Religions. While every Wiccan is a Pagan, not all Pagans are Wiccan.
And yes, Pagans do acknowledge Hinduism as an ancient Pagan-based religion, with a glorious history.
