Gurudeva`s Spirit of the Day

Perhaps symbolically, the large canefield across the river from the monastery was burned last night, a not-uncommon sight on the island, in preparation for harvesting today. The fire was intense, filling the entire black sky with the most orange-red leaping flames that reached perhaps 80 feet or more. A sign, we mused, of the burning sufferings happening these past few days in the world as economies were crippled, as terrorists struck now here and now there.

The spirit of the day was clear as we awoke this morning to gentle skies, soaking the earth with a soft rain, as of a soothing grace from heaven. It reminded us of the relief that always comes in the wake of suffering. And it was echoed in the innerness of today's Yajur Vedic verse:

Whoever has found and has awakened to the Self that has entered into this perilous inaccessible place, the body, he is the maker of the universe, for he is the maker of all. His is the world. Indeed, he is the world itself.
