Hindus Take Strong Stand in Indonesia


One lakh Hindus in Bali urge minister's resignation

At least one lakh Hindus on the Indonesian tourist
island of Bali staged a peaceful protest on Wednesday ,
demanding the resignation of a Muslim cabinet minister they
accuse of insulting their religion, witnesses said. The news
item also states that media reports have quoted Saefuddin as
saying opposition faction leader Megawati Sukarnoputri "
should not be elected president of predominantly Muslim
Indonesia because she is a Hindu." The comments , the story
states triggered outrage among Hindus, particularly those on
economically important Bali. Some Hindus there have
threatened to stage a mass strike unless Habibie fires
Saefuddin whithin one month. They also want
the minister prosecuted .
