"We must not forget the injunction about
those who are still angry, jealous, hold resentments, who divide people between
who they like and who they don't like. . .such people should not do japa or
meditation. This only gives power to their negative instinctive nature. They
have to do karma and bhakti yoga. Simple service and temple worship."
Gurudeva
This painting of Lord Ganesha was done by Ma Jaya Sati
Bhagavati and brought to Hawaii by two of her sannyasins to present as a gift
to Gurudeva.
Swami Durga Kali Jaya Das and Swami Ramayana Kali Baba arrive at Kauai Aadheenam
and join in the welcoming procession with our returning Acharya Palaniswami
and Yogi Yuganatha.
Swami Durga Kali Jaya Das, 50, (on the right in the
back) serves in Queens as executive director of the "River Fund" the
New York division of Ma's River Fund project in Florida. The River Fund
is a non-profit service organization which works with challenged people,
those with AIDS and other severe physical problems, and runs the "Movable
Feast" which distributes about 600-700 meals to people on the street.
Swami Ramayana Kali Baba, 49: (left in the back, bright
orange) School teacher at Ma's River school, which has 120 children,
grades preschool thru highschool. He teaches middle school grades. The
school was founded by Ma, but 80% of the students are from families
who are not living at the Ashram. It was one of Ma's first outreach
missions. This is the school's 20th anniversary year. They teach and
use peer group conflict resolution to let students resolve disputes
among themselves through dialogue.
The procession procedes to the temple along the "Tiruneri" path, through
lush Kauai surroundings.
Brahmachari
Siva Kali prostrates in the traditional manner before Gurudeva upon arrival
at the temple.
Acharya
Palansiwami and both Swami Durga Kali Jaya Das and Swami Swami Ramayana Kali
Baba received a foot washing at the temple.
Ma
also sent three young bramacharis who are in the process
of preparing for their future life, quite possibly to become swamis. They are
being trained for this by Ma.

Our
guests went out to San Marga for a tour of the Iraivan temple land.
We
held our publisher's desk meeting to plan for future issues of Hinduism Today.
Joining us were our brothers from Kashi Ashram. We look forward to a wonderful
collaboration with them in the years ahead.
Swami
Durga Kali Jaya Das shares his personal experiences and insights from his seva
in New York with the editors of Hinduism Today. He explained how the Indian
community still faces the basic prejudices of a new immigrant community and
has some way to go yet to integrate with the rest of the community. He has a
lot of experience also in the drug resistence movement that Gurudeva has recently
become active in here on Kauai, as Ma herself had worked hard, before the AIDS
epidemic, on the drug problem.
Our
brothers from Kashi Ashram sat with Sivakatirswami and Saravananathaswami to
share experiences, background and testimony on the international campaign to
end corporal punishment of children by parents, teachers and caretakers.
Swami Ramayana Kali Baba is very well qualified to take this
message back to the Florida community that is served by Ma's school.
