This morning Gurudeva gave a wonderful hour-long inspired talk about Shum-tyaef, his mystical language of the inner mind. He brought with him a beautifully wrapped lexicon, a thick book he had printed out of the alphabet, the history of Shum and definitions for thousands of words.

Gurudeva spoke to the monks about how the language turns the mind within itself, how it helps make the inner experience and worlds more real than the outer, just by its use and structure and the perspective it brings to one's life experiences. He is inspired to share his language now, having completed most of the major books during these last 3-4 years.

After his talk, Gurudeva met with Vel Mahalingum and Sadhaka Jothinatha. Vel has been here nearly 6 months doing karma yoga and studying Saiva Siddhanta, and he is on the threshold of flying back to his country of Mauritius.

Our surprise visitors today were Mr Sham Sharma, a United Airlines cargo controller from Los Angeles, California. Daughter Viveka and father retired bank officer and father's sister, all living now in Southern California. They came all these miles just to visit Kauai Aadheenam, so Gurudeva made an exception to the Sadhu Paksha cloister, and they were given a private tour of the monastery by Sivakatirswami, shown here with the family.

One reason for the exception was Mr. Sharma's three days of help for us a couple of years back. A shipment of plants from India was mistakenly sent to LA instead of Honolulu, and they were stuck there in customs, dying as the days went by and the inspectors wound large balls of red tape.

  • He noticed this, and noticed the plants were from his homeland, so he got on the phone with Palaniswami in Hawaii and with his agriculture people in LA and cajoled and convinced and finally they released the plants to be shipped to Kauai Aadheenam.

So in thanks for all that nameless service, he also received a wonderful gift of a rare orchid (he collects and raises orchids in LA)

  • This is a painting done years back of a family doing bajana, singing sacred songs togther, with Golden Shower (Konrai) trees in the foreground and Iraivan Temple in the background. The Mahadevas are hovering above the family, sending blessings. The image is being shot digitally this morning to upgrade it in the soon-to-go-to-press Loving Ganesha book.

Also today we are sending seeds of the Helani Tulip Torch Ginger (Etlingeri hemisphaerica) to our associate plant collector in Calcutta, India. Shri Dhar has helped us with our plant collection here on Kauai, and the gingers from Hawaii are something he has long coveted. So when they set seed this week, we collected them and gave him an early Panchaganapati gift.

This is the same flower, when just opening. The flowers grow at the end of tall stalks, 6-9 feet tall, creating a remarkable look in the jungle here.

On his retreats, Brahmachari Nanthakumar is inspired to work on the waterways. He is digging out, by hand, ponds and hauling rocks to make little waterfalls.

The water comes from above, falling down the cliff and then into the river below. You can see the taller falls at the top of this photo, and the little ones leading to the pond.
