This morning in the temple Gurudeva spoke about independence. Gurudeva explained that there are two types of people, one who is independent and another who is dependent. The one who is independent is strong within because he relies upon his own willpower and strength and is adaptable to any and all changes that life may bring. He is secure within, and does not find his security from others or from the outside. The independent one knows that anything of the external nature is susceptible to changes, thus finds his secure refuge within.

On the other hand, the one who is dependent always looks for something external for security. He is afraid of change, for it takes away something that he may feel is dear to him. He finds faults with others, for he cannot face things within himself. Gurudeva constantly has the monks practise affectionate detachment. This means that when some external change takes place, he is secure on the inside. He can accept and move on without cringing or having to feel depressed. He is detached from anything that is material.

Independence is being spiritual. It is the utmost important quality that a monk should have on the path to enlightenment.

Our visitors today are from encinitas, California. They are followers of the great Paramahansa Yogananda and serious meditators. Mary works for Encinitas Imports, advertisers in Hinduism Today for the last 10 years or more.

Her husband met Gurudeva 30 years ago and remembered the language of meditation called Shum.

A twenty-year-old young man with a bright face and an aspiring heart visited our monastery today. Here he is, James Bouse, III. (Bouse rhymes with mouse). James contacted us first in May of 1999. At the time, he was living at the Sivananda Yoga Ashram in Woodbourne, New York. He had been there a total of three to four months cooking for the ashram. He has also been studying David Frawley's Ayurveda correspondence course and his Astrology of the Seers course. Hatha yoga, the Vedas etc. were also included in his studies.

James told us that to be able to serve as a monk at Kauai Aadheenam is his foremost calling. Kauai is calling. Hinduism is calling. Finding out about our monastery was a great discovery.

He

James is already familiar with the Hindu monastic lifestyle. His aspirations for this birth are to pursue a life dedicated to God under the guidance of a living human guru.

He says Ayurveda and Jyotish are definitely his path in life. He told us he looked forward to being able to sit at Gurudeva's feet and receive his divine blessings. He asked that a moment be granted for him, in the name of God. He told us "Please understand that I'm extremely serious. Please let me know if you feel I'm right for the ashram."

Welcome, James, to Siva's Citadel in the Pacific.

Finally, a work of art which arrived via e-mail from our artist in Chennai, South India. We are preparing a special feature in the magazine on Hatha Yoga, and this is the style we have chosen. Nice work, Manivelu!

We still can't get over the fact that we can send instructions one day, and receive scanned art back the next day, all the way from India! What a new world it is!
