Hindu Year 5102: Vikrama, the "Year of Fulfillment"

Today was "Sun 6" of our moon calendar. On these days, Gurudeva will give a special talk in the morning to the monastics. These are recorded, transcribed and perserved to serve as a guide for the monastic order in the years to come.

The calendar we use is a traditional Hindu calendar which follows the phases of the moon. Each lunar month is divided into two sections, the bright half of the moon when the moon is waxing and the dark half of the moon when the moon is waning. Each of these is again divided into two "phases" with the quarter moon in between. On full moon days, new moon days and quarter moon days and the day following each of these, the monastery takes its "days off" and is closed to guests. We don't answer the phones, unless there is an emergency or use our computers for any email or business projects. It's a quiet, inner time for all the monks to relax, get outside and wander our beautiful 51 acres of lush Hawaiian jungle, meditate by the river, go swimming, etc.

Cybertalk: We finish the phase with a fun question and answer session on the concept of individual souls and group souls and how they relate to humans and animals. A devotee attendee the talk asked about his pet dog, who never ever sees any other dogs, "Where is the rest of his group soul?"

Transcription of One of Gurudeva's CyberTalks
Date: April 24 2000
Title: Experience, Dreams and Visions
Category: The Spiritual Path
Duration: 1 min., 13 seconds

Another cyberspace devotee asks, "Is it necessary for a soul to experience all the experiences to be experienced or can you perform some of those experiences within your mind?"

Younger souls experience mostly, physical things, and as they grow older, highly emotional things. Older souls do go through experiences in their mind and through the minds of others. One does not really have a choice. Dependant upon the age of a soul, he would just naturally perform, one way or another. The purpose is to get the lesson out of the experience. Once that is done, the experience itself is obsolete.

Another devotee asks, "Can you please tell us the difference between a dream or a vision?"

Dreams are easily forgotten, sometimes not remembered at all. But, a vision impresses an indelible memory pattern within the subconscious mind that is never forgotten.

This was also the last day of this phase, tour day, when guests are taken on a tour of the monastery grounds. Book buyers have the opportunity to ask Gurudeva to sign their books. Here young Victoria Quarton has Gurudeva sign her book.

The latest edition of Loving Ganesha, Hinduism's Endearing Elephant-Faced Deity, was exquisitely printed. The cover has new artwork and inside much of the artwork has been redone. This book is selling very, very well on the open market.

Sadhaka Mahadevan is one of our hosts on tour day. He waits quietly for the book signing to finish.

A beautiful Thanjoor-style gold-leafed and painted Ganesha image given to Gurudeva on the Innersearch.

Our tour group today included a group of island teachers of Transcendental Meditation who dropped by to share with us news on their activities on the island.

At 5:30am the monks and resident guests ("task-forcers") meet in the Indian Ocean Monastery's shrine room and attend a puja conducted by monastic priest Sadhaka Haranandinatha.

This is followed by a 30 to 40-minute meditation which progresses from odinary to very refined states of consciousness. It is a guided meditation given to us by Gurudeva.

Later in the morning, two wonderful souls, Mukhya Moorghen Caremben and Brahmachari Vel Mahalingum, disciples of Gurudeva, came for their karma yoga. They come at regular intervals to bathe our three deities, Ganesha, Siva and Karttikeya.

Then they tidy up the hall for Panchaganapati and the areas around the other two shrines that do not have a hall built around them yet.

They give the deities a fresh oil bath while they sing devarams (exquisite devotional hymns in the Tamil language).

Oiling the tusk. AUM.

Ganesha now sparkles, all refreshed. Perhaps as an effect of this devotion, many fine guests came during the remainder of the day. AUM Namasivaya.

THANK YOU, GURUDEVA

For those who have been touched spiritually by Gurudeva's work, his books, his guidance, his inspired life and example and even his website, the "Thank You, Gurudeva Fund" has been established within Hindu Heritage Endowment.

Proceeds from this fund last forever; they're not a one-time gift. So gifts to this fund have eternal gratitude built into them. They live on in perpetuity.

Each month Gurudeva receives the income from the fund to be used at his own discretion to promote his work and mission around the globe. He loves this, for he knows that it comes from all the good souls who have met him and studied with him, traveled with him or just talked with him over the years. A contribution to this fund is tax-deductible.

This page is updated every day at 5:30pm Hawaii Standard Time.
