Today "Buddy" Swelochan Singh visited with his family from Toronto. Buddy, as he is known by his TV audience, interviewed Gurudeva to air throughout Canada, New York, Guyana and Trinidad.
Cybertalk: A cyberspace devotee from Canada asks, "What is mental illness from the Hindu perspective." Listen in. Gurudeva's explanation, centering on the understanding of the subconscious mind and the eternal truths of the Sanatana Dharma, may surprise you.
Do you have questions for Gurudeva? A detailed index of past inspired talks is available here. Transcription of One of Gurudeva's CyberTalks August 12, 2000 Title: Avoiding the Occult Category:The Spiritual Path Duration: 1 min, 44 seconds Here's a question from the devotees in Kadavul Temple, "Gurudeva why do you direct your followers, devotees, to avoid worrying about who they were in a past life, various occult activities?" Well the occult or secret sciences of the inner mind are very complex, very complicated and a great side track to the Path of Self Realization. If one's goal is to Realize the Self, the all pervasive energy that pervades the Universe, Satchitananda or as a monastic, Parasivam, the timeless, formless, spaceless Siva, one should not waste his time developing occult powers. For the Satgurus, the swamis who have attained Self-Realization, who have satisfied that impulse through attainment, occult powers become tools of the trade. This means that the pursuit of occult powers at that time enhance the individual, they're no longer a side track from the path that is well defined within him, but become a tool for service to other devotees on the path that he has gone to the end of. Buddy asked Gurudeva questions about our Nandinatha lineage, the denominations of Hinduism, Kauai Aadheenam and all of Gurudeva's recent books, while Buddy's wife did the video filming. We took advantage of the event and also took some video that will be on TAKA soon. Buddy asked Gurudeva for blessings in his work and to fully recuperate from a near fatal car accident that occurred to him four years ago. After the accident Buddy's body was in a coma for several days, while he was joyously experiencing the "other side", until two beings of light told him he needed to return to Earth because he still had work to do. His wife, son and two daughters are obviously happy he came back. Later Buddy's four year old son, Pravesh, wanted earrings like Gurudeva. However, after the first earring went in, he found out there was a little pain involved and wanted to wait until his next visit for the other ear. Then the Chandramouli family stopped by on the way to the airport for one more blessing and a few more autographed books. We close today's pictures from the Aadheenam with this really great quote from 1964 when, in an inspired talk Gurudeva said: "Regret, possibly, is an experience
more harmful than the experience you have been regretting."
Gurudeva's other monastery in the island country of Mauritius in the Indian Ocean near South Africa Our monastery is located on the Northeastern coast of the island, where one of the primary rivers, Riviere du Rempart, (pictured here) flows into the Indian Ocean. This piece of land was chosen by Lord Ganesha, who appeared in a vision to Gurudeva. We will tell you more about Gurudeva's unusual vision in future issues of Today at Kauai Aadheenam! A twilight shot, looking up the river. Fishermen tie their boats along the river banks and then go out to sea in the early morning. An afternoon view of the river from our monastery. Lord Ganesha has indeed blessed us with a beautiful home. The monastery is located in a small fishing village. Many of the young village residents are Hindu and love to come for a visit to Ganesha when the have a break from their studies. Schooling is compulsory in Mauritius, and most young children now speak English, French, Creole and often Hindi or Tamil as well. "How to Become A Hindu"!
