The Songs of Siva Yogaswami:

"The single Word hath purified my dross,
Sing the soulful incantation of Siva, Siva . . .
Enraptured in an ecstasy, Siva, Siva,
By constancy of love do I apprehend
Yet in trepidation, I gaze at nothing.
Magnificient indeed is the mystery,
Baffling the ken of e'en the realised seers."

Cybertalk: A young girl, just back in the US from having lived several years in India, as what she can do to make a difference. She says she saw lots of beatings of animals and children while in Chennai. Gurudeva says there is much that she can do, over e-mail and the internet, to show a better way. You, too, can help.

Title: A Vision of Siva
Category: God and Lords of Dharma
Duration: 1 min, 11 seconds

From a cyberspace devotee, who's life has become wonderful by visiting our web site. Anjali in South Africa is wondering how she can have a vision of Siva.

Siva has created the Universe, preserves the Universe, can absorb the Universe back into Himself but there is one thing He cannot do, Anjali, He cannot take Himself out of you. Simply look in the mirror at your beautiful face and eyes, look at the energy coming out of your eyes and that energy is coming right out of Siva. Sit quietly and close your eyes and visualize some beautiful flowers. The light that lights up those flowers comes right from Siva. The same energy within cats and dogs and people, birds and fish and all other animals, that same energy is emanating from Siva. That's why the Hindu can safely say "the whole world is our family."

"May this our God, great, limitless,
smoke-bannered excellently bright,
Urge us to strength and holy thought." Hymn to Agni,
Rig Veda 27, vs 11

At the Aadheenam today, Sadhaka Tyagnatha takes measurements for the Deities. Mrs. Tara Katir and Mrs. Nilani Sivadas stand by to get the measurements and return home to prepare clothes.

This is one of the joyful sacred tasks that Hindu women have been privileged to do for untold centuries. The image of Lord Skanda in our temple here is one of the most beautiful in the world.

Gurudeva at the United Nations

Bawa Jain, the eloquent and elegant secretary general of the summit, at a news conference. He is a leading Jain, and a disciple of the revered Acharya Sushil Kumar who was with Gurudeva at the Global Forum for Human Survival events in the 80s. We asked Bawa Jain why the list of 50 preeminent leaders included 13 Christians, 11 Buddhists and just 5 Hindus and 5 Muslims, when the Buddhists were only 6% of the world population. He replied that efforts were being made to increase the representation. Mostly he faced grilling at this press conference over the absence of the Dalai Lama, which had turned into a major embarrassment for the Summit. We mused that the strong Buddhist representation might have been a way for the organizers to balance the scales in response to the Dalai Lama's absence.

This was the view from the press gallery which Hinduism Today journalist Lavina Melwani and photographer Venkatachalam observed the proceeding. Venkatachalam had bought a new camera lens just for this event, and through it one could capture a perfectly clear shot of the speaker perhaps 250 feet away.

Gurudeva and Acharya Palaniswami sit in the United Nations General Assembly hall with Swami Agnivesh of India. This renowned Arya Samaj swami is a potent activist against child labor, bonded labor and general exploitation of workers. He lives alone in New Delhi, and from there runs one of the country's most effective social missions. We found him dynamic and intelligent. Look for an article on Swamiji in Hinduism Today soon. This is the second meeting in the general assembly.

Sri Sambhamurthy Sivachariayar of Chennai South India at the General Assembly chambers on the second day of meetings. Sambhamurthy is the most renowned Saivite priest of South India and a long-time friend of Gurudeva's. In 1995 he and his highly-trained sons performed the Panchasilanyasa Puja for Iraivan Temple on Kauai, the consecration of the foundation.

Indian Ocean Monastery

in the Indian Ocean near South Africa

There are hundreds of little temples and shrines along the roadsides, coasts and populated centers of mauritius. Here's two of them. A seaside shrine built by a north indian man.

This is the Tamil temple of Riviere du Rempart. Notice that inside the temple all the deities are behind plate glass windows.

A small seaside shrine with the tulsi plant, sacred to Lord Vishnu.

The Mauritius monastery now has a small lending library of Gurudeva's books. Here's Sadhaka Jothinatha lending out the first copy of Merging with Siva to Mr Navinchanda Seewoolal, from nearby Belle Vue Maurel.

Sadhaka Jothinatha holds a one kilo bag of brown basmati rice which has recently become commercially available in Mauritius. It's brown because it still has the "skin" on the rice grains, where all the vitamins and other essential nutrents are stored. It's interesting to note that about 10 years ago the monks were instrumental in convincing the owner of Sik Yuen supermarket in Curepipe to carry brown rice as part of his regular inventory. Prior to that time it was nearly impossible to find healthy rice anywhere in the country. This brown basmati rice, even though it is not organically grown, is nearly twice the cost of the white rice commonly sold. However, it's been pointed out that if you "factor in" the medical bills (for frequent colds or diabetes) and unpaid sick leave from one's employment (both of which are a by-product of eating white rice everyday) the brown rice is actually less costly than the white rice!

THANK YOU, GURUDEVA

For those who have been touched spiritually by Gurudeva's work, his books, his guidance, his inspired life and example and even his website, the "Thank You, Gurudeva Fund" has been established within Hindu Heritage Endowment.

Proceeds from this fund last forever; they're not a one-time gift. So gifts to this fund have eternal gratitude built into them. They live on in perpetuity.

Each month Gurudeva receives the income from the fund to be used at his own discretion to promote his work and mission around the globe. He loves this, for he knows that it comes from all the good souls who have met him and studied with him, traveled with him or just talked with him over the years. A contribution to this fund is tax-deductible.
