Hindu Year 5102: Vikrama, the "Year of Fulfillment"

Gurudeva walks with Acharya Ceyonswami up the road to the nearby water tower for a "bird's eye" view of the area surrounding the Aadheenam. With the sugar cane company which owns the lands in this area closing down agricultural operations, the question looms as to who will take over the responsibility for the priceless irrigation systems currently in place on the Northwest side of Kapaa town. The irrigation system begins high in Mount Waialeale (fortunately the wettest place on Earth) and includes 51 miles of ditch, eleven miles of tunnels and numerous flumes and gates and several major reservoirs, all designed to irrigate some 30,000 acres of land. Local water users, including the Aadheenam, are investigating the possibility of taking responsibility for a portion of this system. ..

Our 51 acres that are currently fed by a major stream from the nearby reservoir, so Saiva Siddhanta Church has a serious interest in making sure the main reservoir remains intact and our stream is maintained.

Gurudeva once told the Siddhidata Kulam that their first duty was to see that the water flowed onto our property. Fortunately we are quite close to the main reservoir, less than 1 mile away. Other farmers and land owners as far away as 15 miles are not so lucky and depend on a complex labyrinth of tunnels, overland flumes and ditches. Many are not even aware one day their water might not be there.

All great civilizations were masters of water and the current system of irrigation on Kauai is one of its greatest assets, channeling water down from the peaks, through huge tunnels ten feet in diameter going through mountains, reservoirs placed below strategic water shed formations, carefully feeding thousands of acres of farmland.

Some of the formations still extant were built over 1000 years ago by the "Menehunes." These were the indigenous Hawaiians, a short-statured powerful people with a high degree of engineering skills in stone works that survive to this day. They were here long before the Polynesians arrived who we know today as "the Hawaiians." Now, we look for ways to follow in their footsteps.

Cybertalk: A cyberspace devotee from London wonders how he can get up early in the morning to do sadhana and yet maintain that high energy throughout the day. Gurudeva suggests that the way to do this is to get up early.

Title: The third eye - being all seeing
Category: The Mind
Duration: 1 min., 03 seconds
Date Given: October 14, 2000

In cyberspace, an eminent doctor from Malaysia wonders, "I read a verse in the Yajur Veda, saying that the seer sees all. What kind of seeing is that and is it available to everyone?"

There has been a lot of controversy about how the third eye opens, how it works and all of it's functioning. When you see your own thoughts within your mind you are seeing with the third eye. Certainly not with the physical eyes.

A novice can go to a museum, look at art on the wall and see the basic colors and arrangement of colors. However, an artist can see all the shades, see the depth and even what the painter was thinking while he was putting the colors on the canvas.

Divine sight is available to all. It all depends on how we train our two eyes to see and how we train the eye of the mind to see.

Today is Day 4 of Sadhu Paksha, and though the monks are not hosting guests we could not turn away a large troup of Hindu guests and a senior citizens tour group, led by Larry Rivera, who all arrived on the same day. We let them take their own walking tour.

This spot on Kauai overlooking the Wailua River has historical significance and Larry entertains these seniors with his happy songs. From here he can look straight up to Mount Waialeale. He says, "Whenever I sing the Waialeale song it will rain."

For young men who are close devotees and who have studied with Gurudeva for some time, we have a work/study program called task force. These two young men, Rajiv Greedhur and Sivaneyan Ramsamy, have come to the monastery to live, study and help out with the work for a short period of time. They are standing with a longtime friend of Saiva Siddhanta Church, Mr. Kownden.

It is not all intense study and hard work when on task force. The two joined on our monthly shopping trip to beautiful Grand Baie in the North, and took a short break from the monastery routine. Sadhaka Haranandinatha is sitting here with Sivaneyan.

Rajiv spent a lot of time working to build up the compost pile which is an integral part of our organic garden.

Having spent more than a week helping out, Rajiv has other committments and bids goodbye to the Sadhakas.

THANK YOU, GURUDEVA

For those who have been touched spiritually by Gurudeva's work, his books, his guidance, his inspired life and example and even his website, the "Thank You, Gurudeva Fund" has been established within Hindu Heritage Endowment.

Proceeds from this fund last forever; they're not a one-time gift. So gifts to this fund have eternal gratitude built into them. They live on in perpetuity.

Each month Gurudeva receives the income from the fund to be used at his own discretion to promote his work and mission around the globe. He loves this, for he knows that it comes from all the good souls who have met him and studied with him, traveled with him or just talked with him over the years. A contribution to this fund is tax-deductible.
