Over the retreat we held the Aloha Breakfast at the Coconut Beach Resort. Thondunatha was Master of Ceremonies, and Gurudeva invited our elders to sit at the head table and give individual talks to close the week-long celebration of Satguru Jayanthi.

Members also had breakfast.

Dr. Sunder spoke of his retirement, which he now feels will be a rich time in his life now that he has discovered the richness within Merging with Siva. He also wants to find some special plants for the aadheenam grounds...

Gurudeva gave the closing talk, urging one and all to live a spiritual life, to take their experiences here around the world to uplift others.

STATE OF THE CHURCH ADDRESS SUMMARY

On Gurudeva's birthday, as is traditionally done every year, Gurudeva presented his annual State of the Church address. He summarized 1999, which was full of many remarkable changes, innovations and uplifting experiences for all of us. Here is a summary:

To begin with we had many new members in Saiva Siddhanta Church. All of them are joining the fellowship which works together in extended family groups in the various countries to benefit the mission of our Gurudeva and our lineage. Members in Sri Lanka have begun the worship of our two Sivalingam shrines that were established by Gurudeva, regularly having feedings for the people in Kopay and Allavedy (Gurudeva's first ashram in Sri Lanka, established in 1949).

The manifestation of the Bethesda Murugan temple in Washington DC after 17 years since its conception. Gurudeva presided over the Kumbhabhishekam. More Jaffna Tamil temples are coming up in Vancouver where Gurudeva will be travelling to for the ground breaking ceremony this year.

The magnificent Amman temple in Denmark is flourishing beyond the highest expectations, attracting local people and the Tamil community who are giving tremendous support. In Norway the Sri Lankans there are celebrating Gurudeva's 74th birthday on this day. Gurudeva mentioned that the government of Norway has begun peace discussions with a goal of ending the war in Sri Lanka. Gurudeva mentioned that all the elders and the young people should move fast to bring the conflict into a conclusion. Seize the day. Certain opportunities only comes up at a certain time. If the move is not made at the psychological moment, the door often closes.

The wonderful Spiritual Park was inaugurated in 1999 by Gurudeva in the beautiful country of Mauritius, creating a special place where the public can go to for spiritual upliftment and meditation.

Positive discipline in raising children was incorporated into our Church's daily living guidelines giving methods to raise children with positive application of nonviolence at home in countries such as our own Kauai, Malaysia, Singapore, Mauritius, mainland America and others.

The foundation for Iraivan Temple was finished successfully, without even a hairline crack. We were privileged to be able to print the Aloha cards and gave it out freely to the Kauaiians and visitors from all over the world who come here daily. We were also able to participate in the development of our county by creating posters and CDs against illegal drugs or substance abuse.

We also experienced a constant flow of pilgrims during 1999,many more than usual, all who came to our island to see and receive blessings of the Satguru and of the radiant Mahaspatika Sivalingam which is amplifying the rays from the third and the second world. Discussions were held with the management teams of several temples, urging them to give their priests better working conditions, salary and social acknowledgement.

There was also a major decision made just recently to change Hinduism Today to a bi-monthly magazine instead of the current monthly magazine that it is. Our website grew in its service during 1999, and continues more than ever to teach Sanathana Dharma to the next generation.

Gurudeva explained his policy that we should take care of little problems as they arise in our life. If we do this regularly big problems will seldom arise in life. Gurudeva also urged families to follow traditional protocols of respect. The wife is to look up to the husband who has the responsibility to keep the entire family happy, including his dear wife. To keep the family ties strong, parents need to diligently chaperone their children and to regularly contact each other when away from home, as when traveling or on extended business trips.

Pilgrims return to the main part of the Aadheenam after the arati at the Iraivan Site.

The main objective of the Church is that all of us should not lose sight of our goal of Self Realization. We can draw nearer to this goal by making a pilgrimage to a far off temple once a year, by attending a local temple once a week, by doing puja daily in the home shrine, by confessing wrongdoings and receiving prayaschitta or penances to mitigate karma created so it does not come back in full force.

We also move toward this goal of Self Realization by settling interpersonal relations before sleep so disagreements or hurt feelings do not settle in the subconscious mind to be faced at a later period, by understanding thoroughly our Saiva Siddhanta philosophy, as expressed in Dancing with Siva, by observing the Living with Siva sutras or guidelines, by studying daily the 365 lessons in Merging with Siva.

Gurudeva also wanted each member of Saiva Siddhanta Church and the students of Himalayan Academy to be independent so they could blend their mind with others so harmony prevails. To make use of the best of Hindu culture because it 's the best of the few ancient cultures that has survived into modern times. Members were asked to not draw lines or have barriers between one and another regarding caste, sex, color and religion. He reminded each one within the Church that he or she is an individual soul of quantum flourescent light, living in an astral body, and having a physical body.

By following dharma the soul eventually realizes Parashiva, Satchitananda and is liberated from birth.

As we enter our 51st year, Gurudeva notes that his is a Church which serves members from birth to death and to birth again. When a member of the Church experiences the great departure, he or she will reexperience birth as a reentrance into a Church family. There will be a continuity of karmas within Himalayan Academy and other instutions.

This is Savitri, Satya's wife. And that ends our State of the Church story for the day. See you here tomorrow!
