Sadhaka Jivanandanatha, your Daily Web Page Photo Processor Deva

Today we had the interesting experience of fumigating our newly installed modular offices.

Termite extermination -- one of the "regrettable exceptions" to the law of Ahimsa (non-violence).

Sannyasin Natarajanathaswami working on art for our books.

This is one of the exquisite paintings we have acquired from South India, part of the S. Rajam collection.

These were specially commissioned for the cover of Gurudeva's new book "How to Become a Hindu." Here Rajam depicts a lade passing from a world of western culture to a world of Hindu culture.

Here he depicts Hindus of all races, nationalities and ethnic backgrounds.

Kulamata Tara Katir with her husband Kulapati Deva Katir held a Positive Discipline class at a local school. They have classes every week.

Gurudeva asked our sevaks, task forcers, to go along and observe.

Deva shares principles of Positive Discipline with the group.

The local parents who have attended are very happy with the results and find they have much improved both the discipline of their children and their relationships with their children.

On the Indian Ocean island of Mauritius

Continuing the tale of pilgrimage to Ganga Talao where worship goes on everywhere and constantly during this holy time just before Mahasivaratri.

This temple is managed by the Maha Sabha of Mauritius, a major Hindu organization. Note the trough in the foreground and around the sides of the temple. Through various openings devotees pour their Ganga water into the trough and watch it flow to the lingam and down and over it. In this way, many, many people can offer worship at the same time.

Two ladies have waded out to offer a huge yellow garland to Ganga Mata. But they have a problem: she is much taller than they are. How will they put it up and over her neck?

Finally, they do it, by means of perseverance and a long pole, they gradually hoist the offering into place. Jay!

Sadhaka Adinatha offers flowers to Ganga.

And Sadhaka Haranandinatha scoops the water that will bathe our lingam at the monastery two evenings from now. Now we are ready to return.

On the way back to the monastery, we are awed by the beauty of a temple in Bell Village, just outside the capital of Port Louis. Seventeen years ago almost to the day, Gurudeva visited this temple with Acharya Palaniswami (editor of Hinduism Today). It was a humble temple in full renovation. Palaniswami, speaking to the directors suggested, "As long as you are renovating, why not make it into a real Agamic temple?"

This was a major suggestion, implying a tenfold expansion of the project. But the trustees of the temple felt the advice, having come at an auspicious moment, must be followed. They invited the great Agamic architect, V. Ganapathi Sthapati to Mauritius. He came„and drew plans for them. Then the directors and devotees worked very, very hard for about fifteen years, sacrificed, persevered, endured and finally brought this jewel into existence

News from Gurudeva's Sishya in California

Taruni Venita Katir appeared on the cover of Weekend magazine announcing Dance 2000. Over a thousand people attended the performances.

Her father, Kulapati Easan Katir introduced Ganesha to the audience, as "the most well-known angel in the Hindu faith, just as St. Nicholas is the most well-known saint in the Christian faith. Wherevere there is an Indian community, India, Sri Lanka, Malaysia, Mauritius, Singapore, Yuba City--- everyone knows and loves Ganesha."

The second dance was Siva Shambo. "Siva is the Hindu word for God. There's a common misconception that Hindus worship many Gods. That's not true.... They worship the one God, and call Him Siva. The other "Gods" are angels, saints or prophets. God created the heavens and the earth. You may have wondered exactly how he did that? Did he blink his eyes? Point a finger? The Hindu prophets say God created the heavens and the earth and all souls by dancing."

"Each movement has meaning. This movement depicts Siva compassionately drinking a cup of poison. The poison represents the sins and sufferings of mankind, which God drinks and forgives all souls for making it."

Thank you Uncle Iraja, and Kartikeya, for taking these photos. Thank you, Uncle Deva, for bringing Shivani, all the food from your garden, and the nice note. Thank you Uncle Easvan & Auntie Devi for bringing dance outfits from India. ---Venita
