Gurudeva meets with Subramaniam Wickramavarathan and his wife Thiraviam.

Satguru Speaks

Cybertalk: Gurudeva answers an intruiging metaphysical question about the rotation of the chakras. The question sparked an inspired response from Gurudeva about the reckless practice of spiritual disciplines, the taking of drugs and the effects of these in terms of the chakras. Be sure to listen in, at least once!

Subramaniam Wickramavarathan, who lives in Toronto says there are over 200,000 Tamils living in Toronto and 12 temples.

He said that of the 12 twelve temples, 8 were founded by the Sri Lankans and all of the temples are supported by the Sri Lankans. They are very happy in Canada. Toronto is one of the most multi-ethnic cities in the world. He is very impressed with how well so many different ethnic groups and races get along.

There is a small, but strong Thai Buddhist community on Kauai. One lady had married an American man. He fell ill and she came to the temple for over a year to pray for him. He recently made his transition to Shiva's Feet. Shortly after his passing she requested to sponsor a feeding of all the monks.. . .

Several Thai families got together and prepared a magnificent Thai vegetarian feast. Gurudeva gives shawls to all the ladies.

The china service used was very beautiful.

Literally mountains of wonderful vegetarian dishes were served.

We all felt overjoyed ( and some. . .overstuffed) The vibration of a "Mahesvara Puja." (feeding the devotees of the Lord) filled the atmostphere and made us all feel like we were in Asia.

In the Buddhist tradition, lay people feel that though they may not attain nirvana in this life, if they feed a monk who does attain Nirvana, then a great punyam (merit) is bestowed upon them.

Besides the feast, baskets of fruits were offered in the temple. Here is a lovely shot of our beautiful Lord Subramanian Deity in Kadavul Hindu Temple.

Offerings to the Shiva lingam in the main sanctum.

"Anna Purne" is one name of Goddess Shakti. . .which connotes "She Who is the divine Fullness of Food Which is The Source of Life."

Another publicaiton project comes to fruition as Gurudeva completed the latest edition of Living with Shiva, the Nandinatha Sutras. Here an advance photo copy edition is being prepared for distribution to members of Saiva Siddhanta Church.

Sanskrit class with Sannyasin Skandanathaswami.

A new computer repair man on Kauai. A bright clear mind with an license as an authorized Apple Computer Repair man.

Our neighbours, Lance (tall man in the middle) and his wife Lindia (far left with the curly hair) and their friend Linda (in the middle) with the Wickramavarathan family.

They all got a tour of our publication facility today.

"Uncle" Adiyta Vinadhara poses with Brahmachari Mahadevan, who wants to be a monk.

The Siddhidata Kulam team that picks all our food and takes care of the grounds with Sadhaka Japedranatha who also works in the garden in the afternoon.

Shanti decides she needs to warm up under this desk lamp on Acharya Palaniswami's desk. She's deep into cat comtemplation whatever that is. . .

We think cat contemplation consists of a deep revery that is also monitoring every sound in the room, because despite the appearance of being asleep, her ears are moving around checking out every little audio event. An intelligent kitty, but a little kooky. . .this qualifies for "laid back."

Photos From Our Branch Monastery
On the Indian Ocean island of Mauritius

On Mahasivaratri night, the monks of the Mauritius Hindu Monastery went on a pilgrimage to various temples. In the town of Goodlands Acharya Nadesan from South India is the Siva Temple's priest. When came time to take our leave, he asked in what name he should do the archana (special ceremony for a particular person or group). We gave the name of our monastery, then he laughed, "Now, you've begun the ceremony, and you cannot leave 'til it's done!" The monks had no choice but to remain concentrated on Siva for a whole hour while the acharya chanted the 1,008 names of Siva slowly, slowly. It was quite blissful.

Later they went to this jewel of a Siva temple in the northernmost town of Cap Malheureux ("Cape of Misfortune;" lots of shipwrecks there, in the old days.) It is actually a blissful place now where live many people who used to take special courses from Himalayan Academy in 1983, and where the highly reputed and deeply religious Manogaran Mardemootoo family live, doing much to uplift the community there. The three monks received a warm welcome and attended a fine puja by one of those students of old, Varsen Lutchmanen.

Recently, the Mahatma Gandhi Institue sent some of their students and teachers here, and a camera crew to film some scenes for a special musical program to be aired by national TV. Here they are shooting one of the Institute's tabla classes under the konrais and Lord Dhakshinamurthi's gaze.

We were happy to meet Sri Veerapen because he is a distinguished Mauritian and also because as a young man he had attended our Himalayan Academy classes. His father had helped to organize them.

The teacher, Naden Veerapen, beneath Lord Panchamukha Ganapathi (five-faced Ganesha).

A mathematics professor, Mr. Vijay Bundhoo, from the Mahatma Institute of Education accompanied the group.

A fine family from the center of Mauritius visited a few days ago, Mr. and Mrs. Baguant and their two daughers, Mira Baguant and Mrs. Kalyanee Piaraylal. They had found Dancing with Siva in a store and seen a recent TV interview with Gurudeva which had inspired them to deepen their meditations and so they came to find out more. They purchased two copies of Merging with Siva and seemed eager to do the sadhanas that accompany the book. We told them we couldn't think of a better thing to do.

The monks recently renovated their office, mostly by putting paneling on the wall using existing wood leftover from other projects.

Now we sit in our just-finished refurbished office. Ah! Lot of wonderful, inspiring work will flow out from this nice place! Next, we need to acquire some urgently needed office equipment: a telephone answering machine, file cabinets, desk lamps, office chairs--really the basics--and eventually, a decent computer-printer, a copy machine, a computer to serve as a server. We'll be in good shape with those. If anyone out there would enjoy sponsoring some of this equipment, please let us know, we'd be grateful and so would a lot of people we work with and for. We are at adi@hindu.org. AUM.
