Caption: Gurudeva stands with Sadhaka Thondunatha, a swami from India, and Acharya Palaniswami in the General Assembly chambers during the Millenium Peace Summit News: We had a busy day at the Aadheenam as it was a joyous Ganesha Chaturthi and we are also running a small selection of photos from Gurudeva travels each day. . .stay tuned all this phase for very interesting news.
Cybertalk: An e-devotee asks Gurudeva for clarification of the statements in Merging with Siva about the Gods working with karma differently for younger souls and older souls. Gurudeva explains that the Gods work with the laws of karma to help mitigate karma or not. They give blessings and boons and They withdraw blessings and boons, but They do not punish. Those who have a conscience punish themselves. Aum Namasivaya!
Do you have questions for Gurudeva? A detailed index of past inspired talks is available here. Transcription of One of Gurudeva's CyberTalks August_31_2000 Title: How to Help Counter Abuse Category: Change and Transformation Duration: 2 min, 34 seconds A question from our Kadavul Hindu Temple congregation, from a young lady who just returned from Chennai in South India who says, "There are many people beating their children in India and beating their cats and dogs too. What can I do to make a difference?" Well Tamil Nadu State is at its lowest point in history ever. Everyone is beating everyone else mentally, emotionally and physically. Those with slightly higher consciousness live in other countries. They are suffering an evolution that must be gone through and they're not understanding the Sanatana Dharma, that if you hit another especially a child, you will be hit five to ten times for every slap given. We pity the school teachers who on a daily basis beat their students and most beatings are performed through anger not because of discipline but because of anger. So what you can do is a lot on e-mail and the internet by providing those that you know of a higher consciousness, those who will listen of internet sites that will give a better way of raising children, a better way of controlling anger and lift the consciousness of those people who are in the asuric world, who would stoop to beat a little child. We're reminded of an American General who was entertaining an American Indian Chief and they were to have a talk and the Chief rode up on his horse but saw the American General hitting a young boy. The American Indian Chief turned his horse around and rode off saying "one cannot trust anyone who will hit a child." So type away and spread the word of a better way. Sadhaka Tyaganatha passed out prasadam at the morning puja to Tiruselvan from Singapore, one of Gurudeva's students who is visiting with his wife and daughter. Saravananathaswami is our host in Sadhaka Thondunatha's absence. Everyone is awed by the view from the monastery looking up at the mountain. Brahmacharini Lila Shaktidevi is here for a monthly visit from Honolulu. She has a very interesting seva that she will be doing at home: listening to Gurudeva's talk on DAT tapes and cataloging them. Sannyasin Kartikkeyanathaswami who handles all the audio really needs this valuable help. Lila's work will allow us to quickly find subjects on the tapes and be able to get these off as needed for various publications, multi-media and for the World Wide Web. On the left Tiruselvan with his wife, Pam and daughter Nirisha. Two couples from the US and a bright family of four from Calgary who are originally from Trinidad. Their parents were from Bihar. A family of four from Santa Rosa, CA. MR. Teppara, his wife, Sunanda, daughter, Shanti and son, Suraj. A businessman by profession who owns a chemical mixing company. Originally from Hyderabad, Andhra Pradesh, India. His entire family are Saivites. It was very inspiring to see his two children standing in front of the Ganesha and Muruga shrine chanting sacred mantras on this auspicious day. A beautiful shot from our Sun One Homa: The Rig Veda says: "THEE Agni, God,
Ch 10, vs 1
Today was Ganesha Chaturthi and we had a most beautiful puja at 3:00 in the afternoon. Lord Ganesha covered with yogurt. . .at this point in the abhishekam one can really feel the shakti pouring through the sanctum. The monks decorated Him fabulously and the kitchen team of the Lambodhara Kulam made a giant mala (necklace) of delicious vadai, and a chocolate cake! The best of the east and the best of the west. . .Hinduism Today. After the puja the devotees took the small palanquin of clay Ganeshas to the river for immersion. It was a colorful and completely international little group. The river was clean and calm today. The final worship of Ganesha is performed. Veena Ram ( in the middle with sun glasses) and her husband Janaki Ram Naidu are from New York and are planning to purchase a home on Kauai to retire to in the future. Kulapati Deva Katir and Iraja Sivadas perform the immersion, swimming out to the middle of the pool with the small raft. This pool is small on the surface but was formed by a lava tube and is over 300 feet deep in the center. The immersion of the Ganesha each year seems to be such a simple act, but always fills the devotes with a quiet sense of completion. The great Lord of Nature, the First Born of Lord Shiva, returns and dissolves in the great Ocean of Consciousness represented by the water. Tiruselvan's wife Pam and her daughter Nirisha. Ganesha's Birthday cake. There were 22 candles, one for each Chaturthi festival Ganesha has enjoyed in Kadavul Temple. Lord Ganesha looked splendid at the end of the puja. Gurudeva at the United Nations
This Buddhist monk from Taiwan was interviewed by us for Hinduism Today. He has a large center in New York and was one of 11 Buddhist Preemienent leaders present. He'd spent 7 years in seclusion in the mountains. We asked him about Sri Lanka, but he knew little about it. The Indian delegation meets in their special room in the Waldorf Astoria. More than 200 had come from India, including 100 swamis. At this point the discussion was how to get Hindu organizations accredited to the UN so as to receive aid from a number of international organizations, much of which presently goes through Christian missionary institutions. Gurudeva sits for an interview with the staff of Beliefnet.com, a new web service which aims to cover religion in a comprehensive fashion. Our friend Ira Rifkin, formerly of Religion News Service, heads up their news division. These bright young women did a major interview with Gurudeva for 45 minutes and in the process told us that their staff loves Hinduism Today, and it was the only magazine which got passed around the entire office to be read. 180 volunteers from the Swaminarayan BAPS organization headed by Sri Pramukh Swami Maharaj assisted with all aspects of the Summit, from greeting delegates at the airport and driving them to the Waldorf Astoria, to escorting them around that enormous hotel and helping in every way possible. These impeccably dressed young volunteers were helping shepherd the delegates into the UN building on our first morning there. It would be difficult to heap too much praise upon this band of devotees, who provided dignified, informed and warm service to everyone. Jai Swaminarayan! Sadhaka Thondunatha stands before a sculpture just outside the entrance to the UN General Assembly Building. Donated by the country of Luxembourg, it depicts a pistol with the barrel tied in a knot. A symbol of the UN's efforts to reduce crime and conflict throughout the world, efforts highlighted in this week's Time magazine, which had UN General Secretary Kofi Annan on the cover.
