 Here is Gurudeva giving vibhuti to a pilgrim. Throughout his life, Gurudeva would give out vibhuti, sometimes for hours and hours on end at the end of festivals. Once in India, when he was staying at Rajapalayam in Tamil Nadu, the local villagers and school children came to see him. He put vibhuti on each of their foreheads. They never forgot this as no other religious leaders or swamis in India had ever taken so much time to give them his "karuna" (compassionate grace.) We continue with tributes and testimonials on Gurudeva from devotees around the world. Here are some thoughts from Pundit Navaratnam, a world famous astrologer in Australia, originally from Jaffna, Sri Lanka, who had come to Kauai Aadheenam years ago. ================ "The 5th of September 1995 is a very important day in my life as Gurudeva planned to visit my home and a pada puja was arranged. At the back of my head I was in contemplation as to whether I was doing the right thing by performing a pada puja to Gurudeva when my actual Guru was Yogaswami. Yogaswami appeared to me in a meditation in the place where arrangements had been made for the pada puja and approved my action of having the puja to Gurudeva. Actually Gurudeva was pleased with the pada puja function and on his return to Hawaii he had mentioned that he had the best time at my home. After Gurudeva visited my home I had many happy events in my life. In one of my meditations I saw Lord Ganesha entering into my room and writing Aum in Tamil on my chest. I got a shock and wanted him to write it again and he did with his beautiful hand. I called Gurudeva for an explanation, he said Pundit you have the blessings of Lord Ganesha, go deeper and deeper inwardly and you will find much more. It was true as once again Ganesha appeared at 10 pm while I was meditating and gave me a hard hit with his left foot on my right foot. Again I called Gurudeva who said that you again have been blessed by Lord Ganesha. On the 6th of October 2001 I was resting at 11 am in the same bed where Gurudeva slept at my home. I saw Gurudeva in front of me beautifully dressed. I called Ceyonswami to find out where Gurudeva was at that time and he said he as in Hawaii as usual. My shock was that it was declared by the medical teams that he was suffering from cancer. The 12th of November was one of the saddest and yet joyous days of my life as my most beloved master Gurudeva attained MAHASAMADHI. I was sad as he had left us but I am joyous as I now see him regularly my dreams and meditations. The world will be much emptier and darker without his radiant light to guide us. However inwardly we can still find him deep within our own hearts. As he and Yogaswami both stated, the one thing they cannot do is separate themselves from us. One of the greatest of my beloved Gurudeva blessings made me to see SOMASKANDA-MOORTHIGAL coming down from holy Mount Kailas saying PALUM-THENUM. Just like Gurudeva got the name Sivaya Subramuniyaswami, Lord Siva gave me the name Palum-Thenum.

We just passed through a very powerful full moon retreat, and our Sun One Homa was a blissful communion with the divine.
One of this retreat's features held on the auspicious Thai Pusam day was the "house blessing" which we usually give to people when they enter their new homes. In this case we had the rites for our own Lambodara Kulam's (priest/temple/kitchen/health "family" of the monastic order) new office. First the puja to Lord Ganesha at Paramacharya Ceyonswami's desk.
In the background you see a beautiful salt water aquarium, where in we have fish of the most incredible hues to help us in our visualization of the inner colors. Sadhaka Tejadeva as become adept at blowing the conch.

The new space is beautifully crafted and will serve also to host pilgrims who have come from afar to talk to the monks. With the kitchen nearby, hosting is much facilitated (serving coffee, tea, etc.)
Since we had the "blessing machine" in full swing we continued on to bless the Mahogony room which is now Bodhinatha's office....
And then on to the Siddhidata Kulam office "trailer" which is a top quality mobile construction office. Lord Ganesha presides here as well.
People sometimes say that Hinduism is not a religion, but a way of life. We prefer to say that it is indeed a religion, one that permeates every moment of life!

A big "storm front" has been moving across the state of Hawaii, traveling from the Southeast to the Northwest bringing with it much needed rain, finally reaching Kauai. After a month of sunny weather, the plants are happy to be drenched and the Wailua river is in full spate! The devas are making sure the island keeps up its reputation where the top of Mount Waialeale receives more water than any other spot on earth.

As most of you know, we have been invited to participate in the island's celebration of Martin Luther King Day on January 21st, as one of the Churches representing a major faith on the island, Hinduism. So I thought I would begin by reading the short talk I prepared for that event, because most of you won't be there.
When we reflect on the life of Dr. Martin Luther King, we of course think of the Civil Rights Movement and the success of the movement's efforts to eliminate racial discrimination laws in the United States. Unfortunately though, racial discrimination still exists in the United States. Not in the form of laws but, in the form of attitudes. This problem is not simply a national one but a global one as well.
One of the consequences of the September 11, terrorist attacks was increased media coverage depicting people in a number of countries that strongly hate the United States, some to the point of wishing violence upon it. Watching these shocking reports on television, we cannot help but be impressed by the extent and seriousness of the problem of prejudice. Attitudes of prejudice towards those of a different race, nation or religion can start simply as distrust, which can then deepen into dislike and deepen further into hatred, which can turn into a desire to inflict violence.
Are we born with these attitudes? Certainly not. We are taught them at home, at school and even in some religious institutions.
Dr. Martin Luther King, after giving careful thought to the problem of discriminatory laws, selected Mahatma Gandhi's tactic of non-violent resistance as an effective method for overcoming these unjust laws. What today, then, is an effective way for solving our current problem, which is overcoming attitudes of prejudice and discrimination? It is education.
Instead of teaching children to be intolerant and to dislike and distrust, hate and inflict violence on those who are different, we can teach them to be tolerant, like and trust, befriend and help. Excellent resources for promoting tolerance are distributed by the Southern Poverty Law Center in its 'Teach Tolerance Program'. These are available on its web site at 'www.splcenter.org'
One of their publication is entitled ' 101 tools for tolerance'. It contains simple ideas for increasing tolerance, for you personally, in your home, in your school, in your work place and in your community. Here are two of the ideas for the home. Take the family to an ethnic restaurant and learn about more than just the food. The second, invite someone of a different background to join your family for a meal or holiday.
The booklet concludes with a pledge of tolerance that I would like to read.
"Tolerance is a personal decision that comes from a belief that every person is a treasure. I believe that America's diversity is its strength. I also recognize that ignorance, insensitivity and bigotry can turn that diversity into a source of prejudice and discrimination. To help keep diversity a well-spring of strength and make America a better place for all, I pledge to have respect for people whose abilities, beliefs, culture, race, sexual identify or other characteristics are different from my own. To fulfill this pledge, I will examine my own biases and work to overcome them. Set a positive example for my family and friends. Work for tolerance in my own community and speak out against hate and injustice.
Please sign and mail a copy of this pledge to the National Campaign for Tolerance, Montgomery, Alabama."
