Many people often ask about being a member of our organization. Here are a few excerpts from Gurudeva's "State of the Church Address" given in April, 2001:

"We are embarking on a journey together. You not only have chosen me as your satguru, but all those that preceded me and my successors who will follow. This is a big commitment on your part. Ponder it carefully. We are not just another organization or corporation. We are a living tradition from the deep past to now and on into the future, the future which you will be a part."

"You have studied my teachings, your life has been changed. And now you want to be a vital part of a group of devotees who are working for initiation, have been initiated and are striving to live up to it... Our ministry is from birth to death, death to birth; and, more than often, former members are reincarnated into one or another of our Church families.

And we want you to know that the welcome carpet is rolled out and extended wholeheartedly. It's up to you to take the first step upon it. "

Title: Vows (Foundation) part 1 of 4
Category: Hinduism and Tradition
Duration: 4 minutes, 9 seconds
Date Given: July 4, 2002

Given by: Bodhinatha

Cybertalk: Bodhinatha talks about the necessity of a proper foundation for spiritual progress, drawing on the example of how skyscrapers are built. This was Gurudeva's strong message when he returned from Europe last year, one of the importance of character building. Without character as a good foundation, progress can be lost when a bump of rough karma comes along.

This Mr. and Mrs. Hamendra & Shachi Rana (on the right) from Diamond Bar, Southern California with their daughter Sonal on the left. Sonal is going to begin medical school and came to receive blessings here at the temple.

They knew about us through our web site and they are staunch devotees of Lord Siva, connected to the Self-Realization Fellowship though their guru is in India.

Paramacharya Palaniswami was out at the temple site when the Hamendra family came to see the carving work in progress. He was showing the silpis some paintings of the temple recently done by a local artist.

The ever delightful discovery of "real" rudraksha trees and beads, right on the ground. What you seek is at your feet.

Rajadeva Alahan is one of long time members of Saiva Siddhanta Church and a member of the Kauai Mission. He has a background in architectural drafting and is undertaking an important project for the future of Iraivan: preparing a topographical contour map of the land around the temple. Here he is with our surveyor's transit.

Isani Alahan helps by holding the measuring stick which is marked in feet and inches. Rajadeva will set the surveyor's transit on a point and mark that on his note pad and then look through the small telescope to see how far the ground drops or raises at a certain distance.

The process is a tedious one, but very important for our planning purposes.

He will set the transit at one point called a "station" then, following a straight line outward he will take 20 measurements, one every 10 feet, thereby getting points for every 2 foot drop in elevation. Then he will turn the transit scope thirty degrees and take another 20 measurements. Then another thirty degrees and another, until all visible angles from that station are plotted.

Then when he goes home he marks the points in his digital CAD (Computer Aided Design) program which will eventually produce a very accurate contour map of the whole area around the temple, all the way down to the river.

We have been contacted by some very high end landscape architects who have offered to help us design the gardens and waterways that will surround the temple in future years. They require this contour map in order to prepare the digital designs of the future landscaping work.

Thanks to the wonderful final responses to our pleas for extra funds we closed the month of June just making our needed budget. Thank you everyone who contributed in the final hour. But, we still need to keep up the momentum. Our minimum monthly income to sustain the work in Bangalore and to also sustain the silpis work here on Kauai is US$37,000.00, so please give generously or sponsor a stone, or pillar today!

A big mahalo and nandri to one of our mothers out there who has sent a "care package" of goodies to the monastery for the silpis. Here we have something for the sweet tooth, peanut and pistachio brittle! Thank you for helping to keep our silpis happy and contented... their joy goes into every stone they place in the temple.
