Gurudeva sitting with Paramacharya Ceyonswami for morning green tea. Ever approachable and open, Gurudeva always looked forward to having his monks come and discuss their work and issues with him. He didn't like to waste a lot of time, but would ask "What shall we talk about..." and the take the conversation into "the future of futures." At other times he would sit silently with the monks and together survey the inner ethers in silence.

We started a dynamic Sun One today with our homa. Here is Bodhinatha blessing our wonderful young homa priest, Sadhaka Tyaganatha.

Title: Gurudeva's Spiritual Toolbox
Category: Yamas and Niyamas
Duration: 8 minutes, 24 seconds
Date Given: April 25, 2002
Date Posted: May_5_2002

Cybertalk: Gurudeva said you can either use these tools, or hang them on the wall. The Yamas and Niyamas are two of these tools. When you get to these chapters in Living With Siva as you do the daily sadhanas, try and apply these tools to your life. Noninjury is a good one to think about. Debt is a form of stealing. Another important tool is to improve and review, at least once a year, family relationships as we read them in Living with Siva. Don't leave the tools on the wall. Put them to use.

The final arati of the ancient yagna is a powerful moment.

Everyone prostrates just after the flame is lowered, marking the conclusion of the rites.

Today we had some wonderful guests, Mr. and Mrs. Narayanan and Sheela Venkatakrishnan. They both participated in the recent 2001 European Innersearch and Sheela has been helping with web work, transcriptions of talks and organizing talk transcriptions for the past two years. She also has a history of programming experience in her younger days and is putting her UNIX skills back into action to help us on our back up server in San Diego under the guidance of Uncle Sadhunathan.

Narayanan has been very supportive of his wife's seva and is a wonderful man who has been working in the US for several years and will now be going back to India where his company has asked him to come and serve there. But, even though they are in Chennai they will still be able to help in many ways, via the internet.

Before they departed for India they wanted to come and visit Kauai Aadheenam. Here they have joined the Ganapati Kulam for the morning staff meeting.

We fed them both a light tropical breakfast and after each of the monks on the team shared their work for the day and discussed coordination, Narayanan said how much he enjoyed being at the meeting. His life often involves high level meetings among business associates and he described how it is often a challenge as in the "real world" individuals are often "mannering" to personal gain, for promotion, to protect themselves, advance their ideas etc. making meetings a challenge from a spiritual point of view. He says he has benefitted a lot by seeing how Gurudeva organized everything and when faced with issues in his company will ask himself "How would they handle this at the Aadheenam."

India is lucky to have you both back!

Some Sun 4 visitors from last phase: Here we have the Shailesh Patel, Mukesh Shah and Devindra Patel families from New York and Illinois. They are pharmicists, and first heard about Kauai's Hindu Monastery only a couple days ago from a friend who had visited, and then their Kauai hotel, the Raddisson, also mentioned it. They were overwhelmed to discover our large beautiful property and temple project, including even rudraksha trees which they had never seen before. The trees are now dropping a new crop of seeds. Here they are standing in front of Bali Hai falls next to the Wailua River.

This is Marie Aunio from New Jersey. She is a devotee of Mata Amritanandamayi and has visited Ammachi's ashram in Kerala, India, twice. She loves rudrakshas and had never seen the actual tree or fruits before, so was excited to finally stand next to a tree. She is trying to obtain all the different number of faces of rudrakashas, and has a seed with one face. She was very impressed with Iraivan Temple project. She loves Hinduism Today magazine and has been reading the Master Course email daily lessons for about six months.

During the past retreat some of the monks went for a hike up in the high mountain areas of Kokee.

The flora is quite different at these cooler high latitudes.

It was a beautiful day and we could see the great valleys that run down to the sea on the north shore, below where in ancient days the Hawaiians used to live before the British came and they moved out to the open coastal areas to work in the towns. Today still a few brave souls eke out a living deep in these remote valleys

It is always a wonderful experience to be in nature, something that Gurudeva always encouraged, detaching from work and getting one's mind and body in tune with the Divine through the beauty of the earth, the sky, the water....
