 Gurudeva has always had a great regard for the temple of Chidambaram in Tamil Nadu. It is a very important holy center and one of the very few Siva temples in the world where Lord Nataraja is installed as the main Deity. It is traditional for new temples to have connections with some other older temple, and our Kadavul Hindu Temple here at the monastery where Lord Nataraja is installed has inner connections with Chidambaram. The priests at Chidambaram always received Gurudeva's love and support. One of the elder priests there sent this message upon hearing about Gurudeva's passage to Siva's feet: ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ "I heard the sudden demise of Sri Satguru Sivaya Subramuniyaswami and I felt very sorry and I am worried very much. It is very great loss not only to us but to the Hindu world. Hinduism was spread far and wide throughout world by Satguru Sivaya Subramuniyaswami only. The world has known the greatness of Siva only by the teaching and publications of Swami. He was very affectionate to me and my son. We are all regarding him as Siva. I have performed special abhishegam, japam, pooja and naivedyam for swami. I arranged to light one thousand lamps in four gopuras of Chidambaram Nataraja Temple. It is believed that the light of the lamps in gopuras will lead him to peaceful salvation. We all express our deep sorrow and despair. We all pray Lord Nataraj that his soul may rest in peace. Paramacharya Ceyonswami performs the morning vigil today from 9 am to 12 noon. At nine AM the daily "Nitya puja" to Lord Siva is performed. This is the main puja of the day and lasts for an hour and a half. At the end the beautiful offering to the nature spirits is performed outside at the Bali Peedam.
Tandu Sivanathan and his son Chetan are real tigers with their weed wackers... keeping up the beauty of various sections of the landscape. It's an on-going task, otherwise the Aadheenam would be completely engulfed in vines and overgrowth in less than a year....

Here is Andiappan sharpening some chisels at our work site here on Kauai. These are wonderful men and while we are keeping them in the best of circumstances, quite frankly they are a little cut off from the rest of the world and their families in India here on this small island and we greatly admire their dedication to Iraivan that carries them forward from day to day.
Chinnu, who is a fantastic cook, also helps with various tasks at the work site. Here he mans the bellows on the forge. He is quite an expert in culinary arts and can explain the formulas used to cook meals. For example, traditionally if one dish in a meal is "oily" then others should not be. If one is hot, then others should not be. Certain spices, such as cumin, mustard seed etc. should "disappear" in the curry and not be so strong as to overpower. And, yes it can be difficult to make bitter greens palatable for young people who have a sweet tooth. So, what to do: one method to make them yummy. Cook some roasted dal 'till it is liquid and add to the greens to add a "nutty" taste. And, don't over cook the dosai if you fermented the batter, it will make them bitter.
OK, here is what you can do to honor these men with some real human kind of support: send us Tamil magazines, any old Tamil movies (they don't like the new trashy hip-hop rock and roll style Tamil movies that are being pumped out of India today) on DVD or VHS tapes, any current Tamil newspapers from Toronto. Tamil Music cassettes, or anything you can think of... even a surprise to show that even though they are in the middle of the Pacific, that there is a world of people behind them. Send your gifts to:
