Skanda Shasti, Day Five: all eyes are on the festival of Lord Muruga. Gurudeva says:
Sloka 25 from Dancing with Siva
What Does Lord Karttikeya's Vel Signify?
The lancelike vel wielded by Lord Karttikeya, or Skanda, embodies discrimination and spiritual insight. Its blade is wide, long and keen, just as our knowledge must be broad, deep and penetrating. Aum Namah Sivaya.
Bhashya
The shakti power of the vel, the eminent, intricate power of righteousness over wrongdoing, conquers confusion within the realms below. The holy vel, that when thrown always hits its mark and of itself returns to Karttikeya's mighty hand, rewards us when righteousness prevails and becomes the kundalini serpent's unleashed power thwarting our every effort with punishing remorse when we transgress dharma's law. Thus, the holy vel is our release from ignorance into knowledge, our release from vanity into modesty, our release from sinfulness into purity through tapas. When we perform penance and beseech His blessing, this merciful God hurls His vel into the astral plane, piercing discordant sounds, colors and shapes, removing the mind's darkness. He is the King of kings, the power in their scepters. Standing behind the temporal majesty, He advises and authorizes. His vel empowering the ruler, justice prevails, wisdom enriches the minds of citizens, rain is abundant, crops flourish and plenty fills the larders. The Tirumurai says, "In the gloom of fear, His six-fold face gleams. In perils unbounded, His vel betokens, 'Fear not.'" Aum Namah Sivaya."
Our Beloved and Revered Satguru Sivaya Subramuniyaswami Attained Maha Samadhi on November 12th, 2001 Click to read for Details.
Bodhinatha said at lunch today: "Some of the monks asked for spears to do Kavadi tomorrow, but we have suggested instead the walking prostrations on the gravel path of San Marga." This was also one of the forms of penance Gurudeva recommended for the mathavasi here. And, for those who have done both, it is in some ways much more difficult than taking Kavadi.
In the temple, decorations of the Muruga shrine are in progress. Deva Seyon and Tandu Sivanathan are busy.
Brahmacharini Chudikadevi from Malaysia and Rohini Shanmugam from Montreal help out by making and putting up toranams (coconut palm leaf decorations)
Tandu and Deva send their alohas to all!
Tandu Sivanathan is a real artist with plants.
All is quiet at the Aadheenam. We also have a pilgrim from New York with us for seven days we will meet at tomorrow's Muruga homa and abhishekam.
Here is a wonderful photo of all the silpis together. We counted 79 in all and then there is also their wives and children. So the Bangalore work site is a whole village.
We bring you pictures of the joyful celebrations of the recent Ayudha puja in Bangalore, held on Vijaya Dasami when all the tools and implements are blessed. This year our temple carving site manager also instituted a two-day holiday and lots of fun activities.

Here is Thangavelu the man behind all the ornamental works of Iraivan. He is totally in charge of the drawing and supervising all the works A very experienced man with many talents. The Lotus flower was painted by him.
This flower is on the floor in front of the Lingam where we do our daily morning puja.
Palm frond decorations being made.
One of the work sheds with lots of open space ready for the evenings entertainment.
The forklift was painted with a new look, the earlier color was the
traditional yellow . Ready for the Ayudha Puja.
Seenu , the helper in the blacksmith forge, fixing a spot light for
the night games.
At about 5 pm we started the puja for the blacksmith forges. All their
tools were blessed. Chidambaram sthapati performed the simple rituals.
Some of our dedicated team attending the puja.
Everyone receives the arati lamp.
After that a new stone was blessed.
Each of the silpis took a turn to do the first chipping starting with the sthapati.
These events also signify, according to Shanmuga Sthapati here on Kauai, the blessing of their vocation and livelihood.
Next we blessed all the vehicles beginning with our car and motorbikes.
And now the invaluable crane that lifts the big rocks.
And the forklift
Arati to the forklift.
After the dinner, the silpis sat down for yet another set of
entertainment. It was singing, dancing and reciting of poems. Boys as well as the adult silpis took part in the singing and dance. It was a real fun time. It is surprising that the silpis had so many hidden
talents.
One of the games was wrestling. The boys stand by on the outside of the ring.
Jiva writes:
"This is the first set of games played on the eve of the Ayudha Puja. It is the first time ever in India that games are introduced as part of the celebrations for the Ayudha Puja.
Oftentimes sthapatis and temple managements only think of their personal satisfaction in completing the work and making money. Rarely, do they get involved in the welfare of the silpis. For them , the silpis are like "robots" without feelings and emotions.
However, to Gurudeva, the silpis are "DEVAS". Gurudeva has placed a lot of importance to care, nurture and uplift each of the silpis working for Iraivan.
Each of the silpis love Gurudeva so much for being able to do this this special quality work which they did not find at any of the other worksites.
The respect and honor given to the silpis on our Iraivan temple project is not only enjoyed by the chief sthapatis in India. Gurudeva, even requested the Major of Kauai to garland the silpis that are working in Kauai.
We are just trying our best in a humble way to continue the spirit
Gurudeva had left behind. It is in this direction we introduced the
games. The silpis were really overjoyed and had a nice fun and relaxed time, not needing to think of stone carving for 2 days."

Title: Color Meditation for Beginners
Category: Meditation and Yoga
Duration: 1 min., 45 seconds
Another question from a beginning meditator, who just started meditation but doesn't seem to be progressing according to the speed that he or she might like to progress. "Any help for beginners, Gurudeva?"
You find all kinds of different thoughts going through your mind, all kinds of pictures as soon as you close your eyes and breathe and try to become quiet. Don't you?
An easy form of meditation, done with eyes open, is to put in front of you four or five colored pieces of paper. The three primary colors and three secondary colors - red, blue, yellow, purple, green, and orange. From among the six colors, choose your favorite color and put that up a little higher than all the others. That's home base. This meditation is performed with the eyes half-open, looking at the six colors. The home base is your most favorite color. Let your mind wander as much as possible from color to another. In the inner world, every color has a sound and every sound has a color. So, as your mind or your awareness moves from one color to another, in its natural wandering, it is creating a symphony within you.
Try this for 31 days and when you have completed this sadhana, let us know and we will give you the next one to perform.
