Sadhu Paksha Day Two
"To the Hindu the ground is sacred. The rivers are sacred. The sky is sacred. The sun is sacred. His wife is a Goddess. Her husband is a God. Their children are devas. Their home is a shrine. Life is a pilgrimage to liberation from rebirth, and no violence can be carried to the higher reaches of that ascent. While nonviolence speaks only to the most extreme forms of wrongdoing, ahimsa, which includes not killing, goes much deeper to prohibit the subtle abuse and the simple hurt. Rishi Patanjali described ahimsa as the great vow and foremost spiritual discipline which Truth-seekers must follow strictly and without fail. This extends to harm of all kinds caused by one's thoughts, words and deeds--including injury to the natural environment. Even the intent to injure, even violence committed in a dream, is a violation of ahimsa. Vedic rishis who revealed dharma proclaimed ahimsa as the way to achieve harmony with our environment, peace between peoples and compassion within ourselves. The Vedic edict is: "Ahimsa is not causing pain to any living being at any time through the actions of one's mind, speech or body." Aum Namah Sivaya."

Today was Chitra Puja day invoking Gurudeva and we held the puja at 12 noon. Since Kadavul temple is open in the mornings several drop-in guests were present... One had their wedding anniversary and Bodhinatha gave them a special blessing and shawl.

End of Phase Notice
Today is Sun Five, the last day of this phase
This edition of TAKA will remain up until
Navami, Sun 1, Wednesday Evening, August 8th.
And, by the way, for those who may not be reading magazines much, Time magazine ran a great article on meditation and it was on the front cover. Hindu technologies are going mainstream! Click here to read about it...(opens in separate window)
Here is a quote: "At the University of Wisconsin at Madison, Richard Davidson has used brain imaging to show that meditation shifts activity in the prefrontal cortex (right behind our foreheads) from the right hemisphere to the left. Davidson's research suggests that by meditating regularly, the brain is reoriented from a stressful fight-or-flight mode to one of acceptance, a shift that increases contentment. People who have a negative disposition tend to be right-prefrontal oriented; left-prefrontals have more enthusiasms, more interests, relax more and tend to be happier, though perhaps with less real estate."

Bodhinatha speaks on Japa, Mantra Repetition, niyama # 9, elucidating the many dimensions of the sacred science of mantrams, chanting a holy syllable, word or sentence again and again.
Japa may be done silently or aloud. Sometimes it is best to begin aloud, so the mind is more focused, then slowly let it become internalized as concentration improves. Often japa is done right after attending a puja. Japa is not used to acquire worldly things. Instead, prayers are used for that. People who anger should not practice japa.
The simplest japa is A-U-M. This is the primary sound of the universe. Initiation is important before starting the practice of japa yoga. Once initiated it is essential to continue the practice, to strive consistently and to chant as instructed by the guru.

Cybertalk: Part 6 of 7 - Continuing Bodhinatha's first Guru Purnima class on the role of the guru and his task of helping us improve our behavior, Bodhinatha talks about the importance of moving beyond belief and into experience in religion. Hinduism gives us the tools to experience what we believe in. Hinduism is all about becoming a more and more spiritual person. The second remedy for anger is to put $5 in a jar every time we get angry. This can get really expensive! If you can afford that, it might work better to fast the next meal instead. There is also a devotional remedy, to sincerely worship Lord Ganesha.

Throughout the puja as usual we could feel Gurudeva so powerfully in the inner atmosphere.
Gurudeva carried forward the great philosophy of Advaita Saiva Siddhanta that has come down to us through the Kailasa Parampara. He re-articulated the ancient teaching of Lord Siva as Personal Lord, All-Pervasive Love/Energy and Transcendent Absolute. As Yogaswami said:
""God with form is just as true as God without form.
But hold fast to your conviction,"
"God is formless, and yet He is with form. He is also that
which transcends both form and formlessness. He alone
knows what He is--Naamariyom-- "We do not know."
Thou art beyond the relativity of time,
Thy countenance glows with benevolence.
Creator of all dual and non-dual forms,
Sovereign ruler of our hearts, Come unto us
Thou art beyond the finite consciousness,
Thy glory, no words can express.
Thou pervadeth earth and heaven,
Siva whose splendor blazes aloft, Come.
My Lord, flawless gem so non-pareil,
Radiant flame of benignant rays,
Immaculate one with gleaming holy ash,
Thou Supreme One who sways the ganga, Come.
Salutation to Thy gleaming Feet of Grace
'Tis the Feet adored by the wise:
Inexplicable is Thy Feet so fragrant,
Repository of Grace to the weak, all Hail!
