Sadhu Paksha Day Seven
Our Beloved and Revered Satguru Sivaya Subramuniyaswami Attained Maha Samadhi on November 12th, 2001 Click to read for Details.
Bodhinatha, like the Satguru's who proceeded him is a great "Sivathondan"-- one who serves Lord Siva. Yogaswami sings of these great souls:
"Sivathondan comes,
In meek Humility to enrich the isle of Lanka.
Sivathondan serves
The needs of the mighty and the low.
Sivathondan grows
Without any display of pomp and show.
Sivathondan apprehends
The same consideration to others as unto himself.
Sivathondan guards
The followers of Siva who rides the bull
Sivathondan wills
To work, freed from the dimensions of time.
Sivathondan proclaims
That ye are immortal; ponder on it alone.
Sivathondan enshrines
The contemplative basis of life."

Bodhinatha speaks on Japa, Mantra Repetition, niyama # 9, elucidating the many dimensions of the sacred science of mantrams, chanting a holy syllable, word or sentence again and again.
Japa may be done silently or aloud. Sometimes it is best to begin aloud, so the mind is more focused, then slowly let it become internalized as concentration improves. Often japa is done right after attending a puja. Japa is not used to acquire worldly things. Instead, prayers are used for that. People who anger should not practice japa.
The simplest japa is A-U-M. This is the primary sound of the universe. Initiation is important before starting the practice of japa yoga. Once initiated it is essential to continue the practice, to strive consistently and to chant as instructed by the guru.

Cybertalk: Part 2 of 3 - Bodhinatha continues his second class during Guru Purnima, talking about becoming a more spiritual person and how we can do that through learning from our mistakes. This process is often inhibited by the idea that somehow we are not supposed to make mistakes. But that's not true. We need to spiritually benefit from our mistakes. Bodhinatha talks about the typical reactions to mistakes and the importance of moving beyond feelings of remorse into a stage of learning from the mistake and resolving to not make the mistake again. Penance may also be needed to rid ourself of feeling bad about what we did.

During Sadhu Paksha, the normal early morning meditation is not held. instead the monks are invited to wander the property and merge with nature sitting under a tree, by the river and watch the sun rise...
Then there is a short arati at 7 am follow by a brief group meditation in the temple itself and we begin our day.
Though it is Sadhu Paksha, the Aadheenam is busy. And today things were "really cooking" as it was Ashram Sadhana day for this month (that means our sadhana today is cleaning the ashram). All gathered first in the morning for a group review of hurricane preparedness.
Yoginathaswami outlines the new plan for having two large teams, each working on a list of priorities of what we will do if a hurricane is within 24 hours of reaching Kauai.
The first point of focus is to secure the buildings and teams would be dispatched to nail up plywood coverings for every window of every building. These pieces have already been cut and are ready to go. Our teams did a dry run today, walking through the scenario, making notes on tools that would be required, refining the procedures. We perform this "Hurricane Preparation Drill" every year at this time.
Here is Terry Parish who is hired to come part time when he is free to work on the property.
Terry takes down a limb that threatens to break and fall down on the road. Timber!
After the hurricane drill, the monks began their normal round of monthly house cleaning. Meanwhile at Iraivan early in the afternoon the crane arrived for the next lift to the top of Iraivan.
Our expert crane service.
Sadhaka Tejadeva on the Bobcat.
Loading sand into the sand hoist.
Up he goes...
And down through the top...
OK, pull the side levers and let it drop down into the sanctum.
This sand fills the inner cavern of the main sanctum, .
It protects the workers from falling in and gives them a work platform for each new course.
The sand also provides stability to the structure as the work goes on above
Dakshinamurthi from the top of the sanctum.
We see some new signs that Sannyasin Yoginathaswami has posted.
A recent minor eye accident put the new silpis on the alert.
In Tamil... the message again... Wear your eye glasses!
Silpii Sankaran
After the sand then came the next set of stones.
Ok, down...
Unhook....
Sadhaka Tejadeva and Sadhaka Adinatha are the ground rigging team.
Larry Conklin, owner and operator of Island Crane And Rigging company.... Larry can set down a giant stone on a dime with the touch of a feather. He's super safety conscious which is what we want. He considers it a great honor to be able to work for Iraivan.
Sadhaka Adinatha
Silpi Adaikan
Sannyasin Yoginathaswami, the supervisor for the whole show, takes a break while the ground team rigs up the next stone.
Ok, another one almost ready.
We are working from the front of the temple today.
And what a beautiful day it was!
Jai Gurudeva! Jai Iraivan!

Title: Making the Home an Ashram

Today at Kauai Aadheenam. April 26. Aloha! Vanakkam! Greetings, everyone, from this beautiful Garden Island of Kauai, our Cyberspace Ashram.
We have two questions. "I am upset with the producers for making such movies and half upset with the public for actually paying money to go to them. My question is, what should I do? I know that I can control only my own actions by not going to these films and speaking out against them does not seem to be doing much to stop them. Your words of wisdom would be very helpful."
He is referring to the violent movies that perhaps, cause kids to act in violent ways, like killing people.
Well, word of wisdom is - speak out against and show the karmic chain. Everyone in Hollywood, at least everyone that I know in Hollywood, is interested in karma and understands karma. "I'll see you in my next life." "My karma made me do it." You hear *these little phrases* all the time, on TV and in the films. But, what is not known is the karmic chain of reaction because *an* action we make would cause others' action. You know, I was explaining this a couple of days ago. So, keep speaking out about the karmic chain and explain it to everybody. The word will get around.
Another question from Canada. "How is it possible to bond with one's children and yet be affectionately detached?"
Well, being affectionately detached is not meaning that you are absolutely detached. It means that you can't become angry with them because you are not that attached in an emotional way. It means that you have a lot of affection, yet you are detached enough to let them their lives and behave as they should behave at each stage of their growing up. An eight-year old is able to behave as an eight-year old. But,a fourteen-year old should behave as a fourteen-year old. It is all documented in psychology books by the thousands these days. A lot of research has been done, check it out, very good research. Buy some books on child management. If you are affectionately detached, you will always be affectionate and understanding and bond forever with your children.
What is the difference between an ashram like we have here and your own home? It is the regular worship, the regular sadhana at the same time everyday. If you can accomplish that in your home, you will have turned your home into a place of the gods, a place that the devas would want to visit, into an ashram.
Now we are going to hear the Tamil language, the French language and the beautiful Malay language.
