See the great story below about a major donation to Hindu Heritage Endowment....

Gurudeva wrote in one of his books:

"http://www.HinduismToday.com/ No, that's not a typographical error or a foreign language. It's Hinduism Today's World Wide Web address. If you have access to a computer, you can read our Hindu family magazine from any of Earth's hundreds of millions of Internet nodes, for free. True, you would not get all those wonderful photos or art, but the text is there for anyone searching the net for dharma. "

Title: Affirmation Part 1-- Rebuilding Self-Confidence

Cybertalk: Rebuilding Self-Confidence through Affirmation, Part 1 of 3: For a gathering recently we were explaining the Hindu spiritual path without any Sanskrit words. It is "becoming a better person, improving our behavior and learning from our mistakes." After we heal from a long sickness we have weak muscles. With consistent exercise we can build back these muscles and erase the effects of the illness. Similarly when we lose self-confidence from difficult experiences in life, affirmations build back our self-confidence.

And Now! The Big News~!

McDonalds of hamburger fame
to give Gurudeva's Hinduism Today magazine
$250,000

The headline above is fact, not fancy. To our amazement, Hinduism Today will be one of 26 institutions to divide up a $10 million settlement which resolved lawsuits against the corporate food chain. The suits began when a Hindu man discovered that McDonalds was putting beef-flavored additives in their french-fries oils, though they were labeling the beef extract "natural flavor." FYI: they have not changed the recipe, but because of the suit and settlement they are openly admitting that their fries are cooked with "beef extract," so strict veggies will probably want to avoid this item.

The Hindu man sued for fraud, and this ultimately resulted in a non-trial settlement and a public apology from McDonalds (which is to be published, according to the judge's decree, in Hinduism Today in a future issue and in other, mostly vegetarian, journals). The settlement in part is seeking to inform Americans about vegetarianism, its values and benefits.

While most of the funds will go to strictly veggie institutions and advocate groups, Hindu groups were assigned $2 million of the settlement, and your favorite magazine was one among them. Attorneys responsible for the disbursement spent several months selecting and researching those groups who are having the most impact on vegetarian consciousness and education in the USA.

The quarter-million dollars will go into a protected fund in Hindu Heritage Endowment, another of Gurudeva's remarkable creations. The principle will be permanently invested, and from the income Hinduism Today magazine will give complimentary subscriptions, estimated to be 1,000 each year. Individuals and sacred institutions will be hand-picked for these special gifts, to maximize the ability of the magazine to promote the nonviolent diet of ancient India, a diet that does not require other creatures to be slaughtered for human appetites.

The publisher and editors of Hinduism Today will publish a full article on the suits, the events surrounding the issue, the other groups receiving funds and all of the details. But today we just wanted to let you know, so when you see something on BBC or CNN about the settlement, you know our beloved Gurudeva's mission is part of this important story.

Gurudeva wrote:

"People on this planet are divided in two groups, as delineated by states of consciousness. The most obvious group is those ruled by lower consciousness, which proliferates deceit and dishonesty and the confusion in life that these bring, along with fear, anger, jealousy and the subsequent remorseful emotions that follow. On the purer side are those in higher consciousness, ruled by the powers of reason and memory, willpower, good judgment, universal love, compassion and more. A vegetarian diet helps to open the inner man to the outer person and brings forth higher consciousness. Eating meat, fish, fowl and eggs opens the doors to lower consciousness. It's as simple as that. A vegetarian diet creates the right chemistry for spiritual life. Other diets create a different chemistry, which affects your endocrine glands and your entire system all day long. A vegetarian diet helps your system all day long. Food is chemistry, and chemistry affects consciousness; and if our goal is higher consciousness, we have to provide the chemistry that evokes it. "

We bring you some inspiring retrospective shots from our mission in California. Here is Pandit Tirthadeva Peruman, priest of the Sri Bala Subrahmanya Sannidhi, Suva, Fiji, receiving a silver Vel for his new temple in Fiji in Suva. Tirthadeva was trained as a priest many years ago in our own San Francisco Palaniswami temple when the Fijian community asked for Gurudeva's help to provide them a priest. Over the years he completed his training and returned to Fiji and has been serving the Hindu community ever since.

Iraja writes:

"This is a picture of Easvan Param on the left, and Iraja Sivadas on the right presenting Tirthadeva Peruman a silver Vel for his new Fiji temple in Suva. Iraja spent two weeks with Tirthadeva at his former temple in Nadi for Thai Pusam in January/February 2001. Tirthadeva declined a monetary donation saying he would like to someday have a good Vel for Muruga. Iraja contacted Jiva Rajasankara in Bangalore to have a solid silver Vel made, and with the help of Easvan Param started a fundraising campaign to raise the money. Over a thousand dollars was raised between church members in California and Alaska. The Vel was completed and shipped to California in March. Tirthadeva was in California in May to visit family which is when the Vel was presented to him."

Here we are back at the Satsang of the Golden Gate Mission when Bodhinatha was there recently. Our young ladies of the Hotranatha Ajaya family performed beautiful Bharata Natyam dancing.

Bodhinatha and all the members in the audience.

These girls have achieved a lot after many years of hard work.

Congratulations to the young ladies for carrying our culture forward!

Jothi Param, trained at Kalashetra in India, sings beautifully for the group.

Now the puppet team gives a great show.

A really beautifully designed and presented story!

Bodhinatha watches intently.

Title: How do You Know What You Know?
Category: The Mind
Duration: 2 min., 53 seconds
Date Given: February 18, 1999
Given By: Gurudeva

Today at Kauai Aadheenam; February 18th.

It is a beautiful day, the second day of our Vedic phase. We expect some lovely, lovely guests today. Guests come here within the spirit of pilgrimage. They don't come here as tourists. They come here as pilgrims seeking the within of themselves.

We have a question here from San Diego. Damara asks, "Organ donation is not something Hindus are supposed to do. What about giving blood while still alive?"

If you want to make a connection with somebody, blood is the way to do it. Like to a relative, or a very, very close friend. But to a stranger, no way should this be done because you will be connected to the stranger astrally, psychically. You will both visit each other at night when you both sleep and who knows what is going to happen. There was a big campaign in India about donating an eye or eyes to an eye bank. Then the word got around that if you give up your eyes in this life, you will be born blind in the next life. That whole campaign fell apart.

So, you can see how closely those who understand dharma, those who understand karma, those who understand reincarnation, those who understand the existence of one pervasive energy that builds the universe, bring it out into the public, bring it out into their sphere of influence of family and friends.

"How do you know you know what you know?"

Well, that's a good question. You know what you know when you hear yourself telling what you know to someone else. When you hear that someone else telling the same thing to somebody else, you'll know that you know that you really knew it. Try to figure that one out. Take a good day on that.

Have a beautiful day everybody and we hope that we answered Damara's question. We'll be with you again tomorrow. Many, many blessings flowing from our Cyberspace Ashram into your life through the all-pervasive energy that connects us all in oneness.

Aum Namah Sivaya.
