Planting Flower Gardens

Over the last year, Yogi Dayanatha has spent time gradually adding life and beauty to the area around our monastery's woodfire oven. He's cleared old, shaded foliage and replaced it with rock-encircled mounds of colorful flowers and decorative palm trees. The area now feels open, airy and bright. The array of flowers—which will eventually overflow their beds in polychromatic abundance—include Impatiens, zinnias, marigolds and roses. Aum.

“He’s cleared old, shaded foliage” is the understatement of the decade! . . . it was actually overgrown with huge 40 foot and higher clumps of large bamboo creating a dark and dank area right outside the kitchen and oven area spreading wider and higher every year. Every retreat he was out there ( I guess Yogi’s don’t rest) with a variety of machinery and handwork digging out roots and hauling away this very difficult species to remove. He must be tearing out his entire past and replanting a dynamic future (smile). BTW it is remarkable to watch the energy the monks manifest on their “days off” (retreat phase). Gurudeva said once that during a retreat the monks can lay around their Guha if they want – I asked Yoginathaswami about that one day and he said “that never happens”!
