Gurudeva’s Talk, 1995: The Pranas Under the Control of the Individual

Satguru Sivaya Subramuniyaswami

How does an individual gain control of the pranas? One of Gurudeva’s insights in this talk is that pranas, our energies, are influenced greatly by the company we keep, and by the sadhanas we perform. Listen to the talk!

How many meditations are contained in this 16 minutes at Gurudeva’s feet? A week’s worth – a month’s worth, a lifetime’s worth. I happen to be with one of our Paramacharyas one day when an Indian man approached him and wanted to ask some questions. Our Paramacharya must have sensed this was going to be a long question as he invited the man to sit down (unusual) and we all did. He (the guest) proceeded to spin fantastic and complex philosophical thought-forms mixed with questions and contradictions that he was seemingly seeking a resolution for. But really it was hard to know if he was sincerely asking a question or just wanting to use Paramacharya as a sounding board so he could listen to his own speech on the matter. It was a very complex version of Vedanta that left God out of it completely. I was thinking privately to myself – how in the world do you respond to that! Finally, after a very long time, the man stopped talking to catch his breath. Our Paramachar’s sat there in complete repose and finally His response was over in one breath with one sentence and left the man finally sitting in silence. Our Gurudeva teaches us the path of Sadhana! That concluded the meeting!
