A Grand Departure

Jai Sivaya Subramuniyaswami!
Jai Satguru Bodhinatha Veylanswami!
Jai Kailasa Parampara!

Today we celebrate the completion of Sannyasin Brahmanathaswami's incarnation for this birth and his life's mission as a Sannyasin of the Saiva Siddhanta Yoga Order. On December 22nd at 10 PM, Swami left his body, transitioning from this physical world into Siva's inner world of light. Less than 24 hours after his transition, at 12:33pm on December 23rd, Swami's remains were given a traditional departure ceremony followed by a swift cremation—all overseen by an entourage of twelve Saiva sannyasins. As a Saiva sannyasin, Swami's funeral rites were conducted on the day he donned his kavi robes, many years ago. For our monks, this is not a time of mourning or grief, but a time to celebrate a long life well lived, brought to completion in a natural and noble way. As many of our mathavasis can attest, Swami is already living a very active existence on the inner planes. The Tirukural succinctly says, "Death is like falling asleep, and birth is like waking from that sleep."

Yesterday, on the 26th, the monastery held a Reflective Honoring, a small gathering to remember the life that Swami lived so beautifully. Monks and island devotees shared stories of their interactions with him throughout life, messages were read from around the world from those who knew him and worked with him on many projects, including his beloved SivaSiva app. To conclude, Satguru gave a meaningful short talk on the continuity of awareness from life to life, stating that while many see life as a book which, read once, comes to the end, Hindus see it as one chapter in a book, which leads not to the end but to the next chapter. Consciousness does not die. You are invited to add your own testimonies in the comments below.

Ganapathi Thunai. I met Brahmanathaswami in 2001 when I went to the monastery for Gurudeva’s first Mahasamadhi observance. On the day I left, I checked out from the hotel and went to the Kadavul Temple one last time before going to the airport. Brahmanathaswami was meditating inside the Murugan shrine. I sat in front of Murugan and talking to Murugan in my mind, “Muruga, I don’t know how to meditate.” A few minutes later, Brahmanathaswami came out of the shrine, sat next to me on the pink carpet and started giving me instructions on how to meditate on His own without me asking Him. Then He went inside and came back with a few sheets of printed paper on how to meditate to take home. This was a wonderful experience, my beloved Murugan communicating through His beloved devotee Brahmanathaswami.

  2. Rishi Thondunathan says:

I first met Brahmanathaswami when he traveled to Sri Lanka with Gurudeva in 1982.  In my early years as a disciple of Gurudeva’s and then later as a monk, he played a vital role. Back then, he was affectionately called Kathirswami,  He was my catalyst when I was progressing through my study of the Master Course, always eager to assist with my understanding of the teachings.  During the 14 years, I was privileged to live and serve in Gurudeva’s monasteries, Brahmanathaswami was a role model monastic brother and sishya, joyfully and wholeheartedly serving Gurudeva’s mission.

Brahmanathaswami was passionate about Yogaswami’s “Natchintanai” songs.  I worked with him very closely on the translation of these songs. With his enviable computer skills, he created a webpage with all of Yogaswami’s songs which are sung by devotees around the world. He had even personally contacted Yogaswami devotees to ask them to share testimonies and to encourage them to carry on the tradition of devotional singing.

His appreciation for the Natchintanai may reflect Brahmanathaswami’s firm belief that his previous birth was in Jaffna. His most recent birth brought him to the holy feet of Gurudeva Sivaya Subramuniyaswami.  He served his Sat Guru’s mission for approximately 50 years on this earth and now serves Gurudeva’s mission from the Inner Worlds.

Brahmanathaswami was very happy with our Natchintanai Workshop, it was conducted with his guidance, support and motivation coordinated by Kulamata Premila Manick. He always appreciated all our efforts. We have learnt many New Natchintanai songs thanks to Brahmanathaswami. We will always remember him whenever we will be singing Natchintanai. Thank you Brahmanathaswami. Aum Namasivaya.

  7. Manick Rajen says:

Aum… Brahmanathaswami was in Mauritius for quite some time in the early days of Gurudeva’s establishing SSC Mission activities on this island. All those who worked with Swami had the opportunity to learn lot from him. I am personally grateful to Swami for some of his advice and tips on the computer domain. My last communication with Swami was on last October 2022 …working on a publishing material. Jai Gurudeva! Jai Bodhinatha! Aum.

    Aum! Pancha Muga Ganapathi Thunnai!

    Aum Siva, Siva!

    Aum Namasivaya!

    Aum Shanthi!

I had the Great opportunity, to visit the Holy Ashram

in Kauai, Hawaii (Year 2007) & had Fruitful meetings with few

Swamis of the Holy Ashram, including Brahmanantha Swami too.!

We had a very cordial discussion about Our ParamaGuru Siva Yogaswami

Stories ,especially about the origin of SIVATHONDAN Magazine, by Siva Yogaswami

& followed by the NATCHINTHANAI Book too!

Later, after my Visit to the Holy Kauai Ashram, Swami used to have discussions

with me about SIVATHONDU ,in various angles! it is very still very memorable

& shall be Cherished for ever.

At this juncture, I told him about the BHOJANA MANTHRA, which used to be Chanted

by Siva Yogaswami, before every meals.! He was very highly taken up & telephoned to me

another day, prepared for recording the BHOJANA MANTHRA in Tamil Language.

The captions of the songs are namely,

    – “PAALUM THELITHENUM….”

    -“ANNAM PAALIKUM THILLAI CHITTAMPALAM…”

Good Holy Memories! Aum! Siva, Siva!

    Aum! Shanthi.

    Aum! Anpudan,

  10. Guhan Sivalingam says:

    Aum Sivaya
Departure of Swami has left a big gap in his wodeerful contribution the Saivite world. Such a dedicated Swami. His love for our religion was so great that he always wanted to bring it to great heights. Some years back I had an oppurtunity to work with him during his 3 months stay in Malaysia. He had high respect for the ladies and always addressed them as Amma. Also I was also very much blessed to host him in my home on several occasion.

    Aum Namasivay

    Blessings and love…

  14. Ambikaipakan Balasubramaniam says:

It is sad to hear that Brahmanatha Swami, Hawaii Hindu Monastery, attained Maha Samadhi recently. I received his blessings in 2016 when I visited Hawaii Hindu Monastery in 2016, and has been in touch with him continuously on discussing Yoga Swamigal teachings. He was instrumental in getting Appa’s (Late S. Ambikaipakan) Tamil Book on Yoga Swamigal translated into English (https://www.himalayanacademy.com/view/yoga-swamigal
). In this regard, my brother, Professor Senthil Selvan, and I interacted with him closely to get the translation done satisfactorily. Brahmanatha Swamigal will be joining Gurudeva in continuing to spread the Yoga Swamigal teaching in the Eternal World🙏.

  15. Tasha Natarajan says:

One day Bramanathaswami was teaching Anbar Anbathu and thoughtfully translated it into English. It was lovely. Then he wove the Tamil version with the English version and it was glorious. I have never forgotten that memory of how lovely it was that he merged the two languages together so seamlessly. It was a blessing to be in one of his classes. He radiated love and enthusiasm always. Aum aum.

  16. Sundari Devam says:

Bramanathaswami and I met Gurudeva at the same time in 1971 in Edmonton Canada. Upon meeting Gurudeva he immediately made the decision to return to the United States to become a monk. He was a good friend and the best role model. I am so great full to have shared the journey with him

  17. Aran Veylan says:

    Aum Namasivaya.
In 1987, after Gurudeva had blessed the land for the future Maha Ganapathy temple in Edmonton, Gurudeva sent Bramanathaswami to Edmonton to see how the temple project was going. In fact, the temple-building committee had somewhat lost their focus. They had decided the next step would be to pave a parking lot for use by the devotees visiting the temporary temple shrine located in the residence on the land. Because Swami was in town and construction was to start the next day, the committee asked Swami to come to the site and bless the start of the parking lot construction. Swami agreed. When Swami arrived, the committee carefully explained the dimensions and layout of the parking lot. Then Swami asked where the temple would be built. The committee somewhat sheepishly confided that the parking lot was being constructed over the spot that the temple would one day stand. Without hesitation Swami boldly declared that he wasn’t going to bless paving over the site of the temple building itself. The committee was taken aback. They regrouped and rethought over the next day. Before Swami left town, the parking lot project was abandoned and the committee was refocused on advancing the temple building. Aum. Thank you, Bramanathaswami!

  18. Shanmuga Devam says:

In this vale of tears there is sometimes darkness. Bramanathaswami always walked toward the light, even before he was a monk.I watched where he walked and I followed from a distance because I trusted his discernment. Through his example I came to gurudeva. He always had a smile for everyone and though his journey continues, he will be missed.

  19. Deva Seyon says:

The gathering to honor Sannyasin Brahmanathaswami’s life in the courtyard on Monday was a joyous occasion! Our Satguru and Paramacharya’s are very strong – that we view transition as it is – a celebration of a life well lived and loved. It didn’t hurt that several of our monks saw Brahmanathaswami all over the property in His inner body the last couple of days. Also, revealing news came from Satguru Bodhinatha that this Order also Exists on the inner planes – describing the building and everything! One of our Devotees, Tandu Sivanathan gave heartfelt testimony about how Brahmanthawami went over the pronunciation of Natchintani (in Tamil) and insisted on practicing until Tandu got it – He shared his gratitude and made these sweet soul-stirring hymns one of the central parts of his Sadhana. At that point, a flower from the picture of Brahamanthaswam was “thrown” from the very top of the picture at Tandu! (we are talking over 4 feet) Several saw this playful “Hello” from Brahamanathswami.

  20. Dharmalingam Siddhan says:

    Jai Ganesha! Jai Muruga!

I had the honor of meeting Swami for the first time many years ago. Sannyasin Brahmanathaswami’s vibrant spirit is a treasure. I feel blessed to have worked with him on many computer projects and I keep a copy of the Sivamayam audio CD he worked on by my desk. Mika nandree Brahmanathaswami for being such a beacon of Lord Siva. Aum Sivaya

  21. jigisha, hansaben and champaklal patel says:

    Aum Namah Shivaya

  22. Jai Murugan says:

We hadn’t been to the Aadheenam in at least ten years, perhaps longer. ‘Life’ had taken over. Upon our return, we made that first treasured walk along the path to Kadavul. Swami was on the path to the south, saw the ‘new’ pilgrims, and approached for a greeting. His first words were ‘I think I know you’. I smiled, and might have said something, I can’t recall. But what happened next was that wonderful moment of recognition. He said my name, and that wonderful SMILE came.

  23. Arulnageswaran Aruleswaran says:

    Siva Siva 🙏🏽
Brahmanathaswami helped bring a positive perspective to my life during my darkest moments of experiences… simple thought provoking messages and advise bringing me back to the centered path. Grace upon him and his journey to the inner world of light.

  24. tandava says:

During a past Mahasamdhi I remember how he so much enjoyed
    teaching us how pronounce different
shum words. The glow on his face just beamed at that moment.

In August of this year Jian and I
    participated in the Ganesha Chaturti.
Near the end Brahamanthaswam came and sat near me. His presence and I felt, which I will not forget.
    Peaceful ,serene and …
    Aum Namah Shivaya
    Loved when he would sing!

  25. Pethuraja says:

    “AUM”!.

  26. hitesvara Saravan says:

Aum Namah Śivaya. In 2004, on Innersearch in South India, Śivakatirswami as Brahmanathaswami was then known, recruited me to a seva to fulfill my karma yoga tithing. For all the subsequent years he worked closely with me guiding me and nurturing me in keeping with this blessing in service to God, gods and guru. He will be missed, however, I celebrate the years he worked with me. Never critical but always gentle in his helping me with my assigned tasks I know his soul has soared in merger with Beloved Gurudeva at the Feet of Lord Śiva.

  27. Selvarajoo says:

In the formative years of the Singapore mission in the early 80’s (with Dohadeva and Rajan Kumar), i had the opportunity to meet the monks of the Aadheenam, namely Gurudeva, Veylan Swami, Palani Swami, Ceyon Swami and Katirswami. We now know them by different names. Siva Katirswami struck me immediately, with his ever smiling face and inner glow! He immensely enjoyed visits to the Sri Thandayuthapani Murugan Temple, where once we sat down to meditate. After that he asked, ” Did you see the rays of colour shining forth brilliantly from Lord Muruga in the Sannidhanam?”. We couldn’t and didn’t, of course. He was such a joy to be with, always exuding a calm and relaxing presence. He sang in Tamil during Satsang in Dohadeva’s home during one of the visits, when he spoke about his realization journey. Although i did not have the chance to meet him in Kauai, i cannot forget his smile and his lovely disposition, ever! AUM.

  28. Sivaneswaran Sockanathan says:

I had the privilege and opportunity to work with Swami during my task-force days. He was always Gentle , Joyful in his guidance and in teaching. This allowed me to quickly settle in. His work rate and energy was exemplary. A vibrant, wonderful and kind being. Aum Namasivaya.

  29. Anil Kumar says:

Never interacted but always could identify with his loving face in the pictures. Blessed Soul Aum 🙏

  30. Santhirapala Family says:

Brahmanthaswami was one of the first monks we interacted with – collaborating on the London Hindu Temples article together. His warmth and expert eye really helped deepen our own connection with Satguru and the Mastercourse teachings. When we later remarked that many London Saivites, had never come across the Natchintanai- Swami swung into action again and produced a booklet of twenty, easy to sing Natchintanai songs. This is now sung by the London Othuvar (specialist singer of the Thirumurai) and London Pan Isai group ( 50 or so students of the Othuvar who regularly sing at temples). We are grateful for his seen and unseen blessings in our lives.

  33. Lynda mcclanahan says:

We met swami on Innersearch. He was always full of good humor, generosity and mischeviousness. He taught us many things, not the least of which was how to eat with our hands. At Chidambaram temple, he slipped up behind and asked if we really wanted to see something special. Deftly, he guided me and my husband Joel to an unassuming stone platform and invited us to sit down. Waves of Shakti immediately enfolded and overwhelmed us, entrancing and filling us with indescribable happiness. “See?” Said swami. “Its the best seat in the house!” Thanks for everything, swami.

  34. Asha Tanzi says:

We had many precious meetings with Brahmanathaswami, on the SivaSiva app and other projects from vegetarianism to raising children. The enthusiastic glow on his face was such a big part of our trips to the monastery. Thank you for every moment spent with our family, Brahmanathaswami. Aum Namasivaya.

  35. admin says:

From an anonymous devotee: Sending a few words spoken by Brahmanathaswami, from back in 2009:

“Well, music is not about “study” it about playing and singing, being a bird in the wind, where your voice is the bird and the universe is the wind and you are flying. So that will be the most fun you will have had in a long time (smile)”

  36. Namrata Ragade says:

Swami was an extraordinarily hard working Siva Bhaktar, waking up very very early to work on the Siva Siva app. He was so dedicated to enhancing it and bringing the knowledge of Saivism especially to the younger generation.

I am very inspired by Swami’s willpower in the setting of tremendous health challenges. He faced them with a smile, while continuing his Sivathondu!

    Aum Namah Sivaya

  43. Bhavani Param says:

Om Sivaya. An early memory of Swami was a singing yatra he organized for us devotees who mostly lived in the East Bay. We caravanned to different temples and sang bhajans with Swami leading. I remember being so inspired by the joy with which he sang, that infectious, loving smile and that rich voice…

Thank you, Swami, for all the effort and love you put into “Good Thoughts.” I’ve always enjoyed singing bhajans in the temple, but these Natchintanai are not only on the Saivite Gods we love but so many are about the Guru and have a depth and beauty that are unmatched. So grateful for them.

  44. Puvaneswary Roberts says:

Aum Namasivaya, my husband and I met Brahmanathaswami during our pilgrimages to Kauai monastery. I fondly remember him as ‘Satsang Swami’ as he conducted the Natchintanai satsang with groups during pilgrimages. His smile and enthusiasm gave me the confidence to dive into singing Natchintani without anxiety. Always encouraging us to keep striving. Shall miss his physical presence but many memories of the his beautiful life will continue to uplift and guide us daily in our lives. Aum Shanthi, Shanthi, Shanthi, Aum Namasivaya.

  48. Sahunthala Vinothachandran says:

Brahmanathaswami had been a blessing in my life, kindly guided me when I needed direction. Often through his bajan satsang sessions, he would gently guide us into shum chanting and meditation. Without having to ask, he would often address the needs and bring clarity to the mind, guiding on spiritual sadhanas and pranayama. I am grateful for all that he had imparted. May we be blessed with his guidance from the inner worlds.

  49. TinaD says:

Brahmanathaswami, we will miss Your jovial, nurturing, physical Self and are deeply saddened for our own selfish desires; yet we celebrate in your Grand Departure and merger with GuruDeva and Parampara in SivaLoka. One of the most precious original App You created was the importance of Pranayama and how to practice that with the first 18 images of Shum Tyeif Language. It enabled One to allow adjustments at the breathing rate with time control adjustments. Thank You and it was a most practical guiding tool in daily sadhana and for preparation for transition.
Many more wonderful Apps have been created but that was this scribe’s favourite.

Your kindness and respect for all ladies was so apparent in how lovingly, and patiently You taught Us to sing Natchintanai at various satsangs, and Ladies Retreat. At various Innersearches, and various Festivals, You looked after everyone’s needs from a small baby’s need for fresh milk to advising teenagers and young adults. You always responded to any guidance we sought immediately.

You were Our role model when serious health challenges presented; yet You showed Us the meaning of how to live a productive life even in times of great challenges:
“Rishis proclaim that we are not our body, mind or emotions. We are devine souls on a wonderous journey. We came from God, live in God and are evolving into oneness with God. We are, in truth, the Truth we seek. Aum”(Dancing with Shiva)

It was indeed Our good fortune and blessing to be guided and nurtured by You, Our Dear Brahmanathaswami. We celebrate Your wonderful life as a Monk in Kailasa Parampara and Thank You, Mahalo, Dhanyawaad, Mulingshum from the bottom of Our Spirit (Light-Atman) for choosing the most challenging life of renunciation. Aum Shanti Shanti Shanti

  50. Dinanatha Bodhiswami says:

    О, God! Beloved Brahmanatha!
He left his body for Mahasamadhi on December 22… Just found out. The brightest person who devoted himself entirely to the service of Gurudeva, shaiva-siddhanta … people. I noticed his radiant smile long before I met him in person – in a general photo of all the monks of the monastery – and immediately loved him. He just entered my heart, and on my 3rd visit to Kauai, in 2013, we became friends. Somehow he spent with us almost the whole day, with all the busyness of the monks, once again, showing us the temple under construction, the garden, the office that was being reconstructed then, and his workplace. We dined together, and he literally filled us with fruits from the garden, also giving them out for us for the road… And his voice? He adored sweet-sounding Tamil and sang us excerpts from “Natchintanai”, enthusiastically demonstrating how Tamil children do it… For the last ten years, he had been keeping our magazine, making sure that we receive the layout of the original version on time. My heart is torn with longing that we will not see and hear him anymore, and we will not read his “Good luck Dinanatha! Svasti Astu – Be Well”. Brahmanathaswami… Om Siva Siva.

  51. Easan says:

Om Namah Sivaya! Jai to the Saiva Siddhanta Yoga Order on this and inner planes! Once upon a time when we were both on Task Force Brahmanathaswami and I drove across the United States distributing Gurudeva’s “On the Path” series of books, visiting book stores and college libraries. He lived a life of dedication to the Paramparai’s mission!

  52. Dishanna Pillay says:

    To our dear Bramanathaswami,

Thank you for teaching me how to sing songs about God Siva that I still remember to this day. Your patience and thought in teaching me will always be remembered. You spent your time telling us stories that were told with such expression and always left me wanting to hear more. Thank you for everything you have done for us. Aum Namashivaya. “I am in god, and god is in me. I am alright right now.”

    – Dishanna Pillay

  53. Mat says:

Without swamiji’s early encouragement and support I would have never had the opportunity to contribute a number of articles to Hinduism Today, opening the door to what I now affectionately call being a ‘professional Hindu’. I owe him everything in this regard and didn’t really recognize it until now. Om namah shivaya. Om shanti shanti shanti.

  54. Richmond says:

Brahmanathaswami / Sivakatirswami was a great support to me and a supporter of my Devawriter Pro program for Sanskrit digitisation, and spoke very compassionately to my younger son, when, at 16, he was at what it the most difficult phase in this life.

Unfortunately I was never able to meet him physically, but thanks to the good offices of the internet we enjoyed a rich and productive relationship.

What can I say, except, I miss him almost as much as I miss my father: and that is saying an awful lot.

  55. Easan says:

Brahmanathaswami was one of five monastics who accompanied Gurudeva the morning he walked through the jungle, guiding the Caterpillar dozer, carving the San Marga path to the Swayambhu Lingam.

  56. Ganga says:

I always saw Brahmanathaswami as a ball of light with a huge, bright and loving smile.
