In their bewildered thoughts are the three
lions: lust, anger and ignorance. In their
meandering thoughts are the four jackals: mind, intellect, will and egoity. In their sensory thoughts are the five elephants: taste, sight, touch, hearing and smell. These are the internal and external foes of the contending mind.§
