Children at an ashram in India perform namaskaram to God Siva. They are on the Ganga River. They worship here every day. The homa fire in front of them will hold the sacred fire, called Agni.

Our Hindu way of greeting other people is to join our hands, palms together, at our heart or raised to the forehead. We say, “namaskaram” or “namaste.” Both mean, “I bow to the Divine within you.” In our Saiva community, we say, with folded hands, “vanakkam” or “Aum Sivaya.” The meaning is similar. This beautiful custom reminds us and the person we are meeting that we are divine beings. We are immortal souls on a wonderful journey. It opens our heart to see that person’s good qualities. We remember to treat him or her with respect and love. When you greet someone, really see God by looking deeply into that person’s eyes. The eyes are like windows into the soul. We use this gesture when we pass by or visit a temple. We use it when we stand before one of the Deities. We greet our teachers, our guru and other holy men and women in this way. Use this greeting whenever you can. But if someone you meet reaches out to shake hands, then it is good to follow that tradition. That is the Western way of showing respect and friendship. These days many non-Hindus know about namaskaram. §

image Namaskaram is done with palms held together near the heart. This gesture is called "anjali mudra." We see the divinity in everyone we meet.

image After the arati light is offered to God, we raise our hands high above our head in namaskaram. This gesture is only done for God and guru.
