Sivapuranam
Saint Manickavasagar , 2010-06-19
This is the most famous of all of the songs by Saint Manickavasagar. The 95 lines of the Sivapuranam have been sung by Saivite Hindus in their homes, temples and events for 1000's of years. In Sri Lanka Siva Yogaswami had this song sung daily in his small ashram and made the memorization and recitation of Sivapuranam into to a small movement. Please note line 93 says that those who recite this song with understanding, will have the good fortune to stay at Lord Siva's feet. So do your best to study the translation and get a clear visualization as you sing.

1. Regarding Lines: 25 - 30, Saiva Siddhanta Scholar of Agamas and Tamil Scriptures, Sabharathnam Sivacharyar, says:
"In these lines Māṇikka Vācakar speaks of two forms of embodiment: 1) non - moving forms (sthāvaram ), grass, wild plants(weeds), trees and stones and 2) moving forms (jaṅgamam) worms, animals, birds, snakes, human beings, ghosts, groups of semi - divine beings, asuras, sages, devas. But he does not mean this to be a theory of the evolution of the soul from mineral to plant to animal to human. When he says “I got wearied having taken birth in all these categories.” The ‘I’ here denotes all the beings, since it is customary with our saints to thing of all beings in their prayers. Obviously no living mother give birth to a stone. When the saint says ‘kallāy manitarāy’? ‘I have taken birth as stone.’ We have to understand this from the view of some puranic stories where some souls had to assume the form of stone due to some curse. Nor, could a soul take birth directly as ghost, demi - god, or deva. Souls become ghosts (disembodied) or demi - divine or devas according to their karma. The theory of evolution of the soul through the mineral, to plant, to animal and then to human form, is not accepted by Hinduism and especially not by Saivism
