From The Bangalore Carving Site
May 4, 2013Work is progressing steadily on the roof stones of the Nandi Mandapam. With our new carbide chisels work has become more and more efficient and accurate.
K. Ganesan is working on one of the four stones.
With the chisels\
sharpness retained for a longer period (the carbide wears away very very slowly) the silpis get a chance to work longer on the stones. Before, every few minutes a chisel had to be changed as the mild steel tips dulled easily.'
These chisels are made in varying thickness and as such access to difficult areas easier. Work such as this on the pavkal stone would have become a difficult task before as the silpis had to hold a 3\/4 inch hexagon chisel to access this corner.
The Cardbide tipped chisels has not only made work more efficient but has cut down a good amount of time spent on sharpening the chisels.
