From the Bangalore carving site
September 2, 2013At the carving site in Bangalore, work is moving forward on the final batch of stone chains. As you can imagine, carving a chain from a single piece of stone is no easy task, but the carvers do it with incredible refinement and skill.

Silpi Chellakannu is working on the last stone chain to be roughed out.

To speed up marking, computer drawings are pasted directly onto to the stone. This has enhanced the accuracy of complicated carvings like this chain which has a eight sided profile.

The first four completed chains. They are waiting for the ornamental work.

A unique way of splitting the chains.

With these small supports uncarved, the other areas are opened up bit by bit, slowly exposing the chain.
