Quarry Stones

Image

This is a block measuring 6ft by 9ft by 4ft weighing over 18 tons. This stone is for the 14 foot Hanuman\

s base.'

Image

The weight of the stone requires the help of 2 cranes which can carry a gross weight of 30 tons.

A close up view showing the men looping the chain rope to the crane\

s hook.'

The stone was lifted from the lorry and laid on the ground.

A closeup view of the gomukai pot. We have chiseled about 20 inches deep using a special 2 feet chisel when compared to the normal chisel which is only 5 inches long. Later a 3 inch width hole will be hand drilled in the centre to drain the water out.

Image

Here you can see the two chisels kept inside the pot.

Image

This is a photo of the sunshade. You can see a small hole carved in the centre and a hand carved parrot on top. This parrot took over 40 days to carve.

Image

The parrot is slided down the hole and fits in perfect. This addition makes the sunshade more creative and a decorative master piece. All this small additions makes Iraivan a very special temple. We can be proud that no temple of this nature will come up in the future. You may wonder how is this possible.
1. This temple is totally hand carved taking over 25 years to complete.
2. No one has the patience to wait that long. Temple management are looking for readymade temples nowadays. Small ones are available.

Pavkal (roof stones), There is a decorative 5 layer floral pattern that will come here. There are 4 such stones.

Image

This is a close up view. Silpis are working on the basic carvings now. Will take another couple of months to see the carved master piece.

Image

These are some of the cut blocks for the pillars of the perimeter wall. There are over 50 pillars in all, we have cut over 30 of now. The building at the back are where the silpis stay.
