Gurudeva here at work with his daily communications. Now he is sending excerpts from the Nandinatha Sutras and also Living with Siva in answer to many of the queries and issues that people bring to his feet. This morning Gurudeva gave a wonderful talk to the monks about "Realization." Realization means not only the highest spiritual realizations, but it must also mean realizing where you are in the process of "character building" which Gurudeva defined, after reading the ten restraints of the Yamas, as "care, acting -- to act with care." He said: "To build character, to act in accordance with the Yamas, a person has to realize that, having acted instinctively, he experienced consequences that he does not want to experience again, so, now, he realizes that he should follow these restraints and not go through those consequences again. This is the foundation, without this foundation there is no spiritual growth, no fruit. Trying to realize the highest Realizations before laying this foundation would be like having a lime tree that was cut off from its roots and putting it into a bucket and expecting it to bear fruit. Of course it will not."

Here are the ten classical Restraints from our holy Vedas:

Yamas: Ten Classical Restraints

Sutra 46
All devotees of Siva practice ahimsa, not harming others by thought, word or deed, even in their dreams. Adhering to satya, truthfulness, they do not lie, deceive, betray promises or keep secrets from loved ones. Aum.

Sutra 47
All devotees of Siva uphold asteya, never stealing, coveting, cheating or entering into debt. They practice sexual purity, brahmacharya, controlling lust by remaining celibate when single and faithful in marriage. Aum.

Sutra 48
All devotees of Siva exercise kshama, restraining intolerance with people and impatience with circumstances. They foster dhriti, steadfastness, overcoming nonperseverance, fear, indecision and changeableness. Aum.

Cybertalk: A cyberspace devotee heard that chakras need to be cleaned in order for the kundalini to work properly and wants to know what this process of cleaning the chakras is. Gurudeva says that the cleaning of the chakras is a new age concept and what is actually meant is that a cleaning of the subconscious mind is necessary. He also says that if a person wants to play with the kundalini and the chakras then the first thing to do is to get a good foundation by becoming a Hindu.

Title: Describes Our Perfect Souls
Category:
Duration: 3 min., 08 seconds
Date Given: August 26, 1998

Well, this is August 26th and we are together again. Looking out through cyberspace, I see all of your faces. Several hundred people are tuning into 'Today at Kauai Aadheenam'. We have a little counter that is counting the number of, they say 'hits' or 'entries', into the ashram. We welcome each and everyone.

Today is going to be a wonderful day. You are going to be positive. You are going to be strong. You are going to face the forces of the world as a divine soul. Your soul is going to move through the world, untouched by any of the forces of the world. The forces of the world, it is only prana. You can walk through the rain without getting wet, when you are the soul. But when you are the body and the emotions you can walk through the rain and get drenched. The forces of the world can be moved by you, because you can make a difference. You have courage, you are strong. The more you exert this strength with love flowing through it, the stronger you become. That strength you can take into your next life and the next and the next.

You are all beautiful souls. I see your shining faces. I don't see your bodies. I don't know what emotional havoc or peace or quiet or contention you are going through this very moment. But I see your soul. It is peaceful, it is strong and it is on the path to merging with God. You are perfect you have to accept that. You are not imperfect. Your soul is not tarnished, not tainted, not injured in anyway by the experiences you may be going through this very moment.

So, take courage, proceed with confidence. Get the realization strongly in your subconscious mind that you are a soul made of quantums of intense light, put together and evolving life after life, living in one body after another, having one intellect after another, having one emotional structure after another. But you are always the same, ever growing, ever loving, ever living, ever knowing.

Just think about yourself. You are a wonderful person. I know it and I want you to know it. I want you to know it now and live it today.

Our life line is the water coming to our property from this reservoir just north of the monastery land. Part of a vast and complex irrigation system this is one piece of the giant and very important network of water channels that we call the East Kauai Water system, which is now under the control and supervision of a citizens coalition that includes Saiva Siddhanta Church. Our monks have taken a lead in its preservation and development. Today, the windless water reminds us of the famous name of Lord Muruga: Saravanabhava. The Lake of Peace. In a famous story, a devotee complained that he was unable to sing the glories of Lord Muruga. He did austerities for many years. Lord Muruga came to him in a vision and wrote on his tongue with his Silver Vel, after which he was able to sing with great eloquence. Lord Muruga also whispered in his ear:

the great Tamil saying which was subsequently oft repeated by our Paramaguru Sivayogaswami:

"Summa Iru -- Be Still"

This lovely mound in front of our property, was established years ago by one of our Kulapatis who came on task force, Guhan Sivalingam from Klang, Malaysia. Today it flourishes with his plants and more.

Indian Ocean Monastery
Gurudeva's spiritual center in the island country of Mauritius
in the Indian Ocean near South Africa

People from all over Mauritius who have either heard from friends or relatives about the tranquility pervading at the Spiritual Park should not miss this exquisite small tropical pond just at the right wing of the Ganesha Mandapam. A very beautiful Japanese garden is already taking shape at this spot.

While the ladies are happily picking ripe rudraksha seeds on the Aadheenam grounds at Kauai, three fine dedicated sivathondars are digging holes for young rudraksha plants to be grown for the first time at the Spiritual Park in Mauritius. Once mature, these trees would produce reddish-brown seeds which are sacred to Siva and are a symbol of His compassion for humanity.

Here Kulapati Parmesh Pallanee and Kulamata Oumavadee are both enjoying some karma yoga under the shade of mango trees. Kulapati Parmesh, director of a computer company that deals in software management and training, comes regularly with his family to the Spiritual Park to rake dry leaves that fall off the mango and konra trees. Every weekend several families are seen coming to the Dharmasala for karma yoga, which means union through action. You are welcome to join too!

Amma Teeruvumbala Devi and our young lady Rajambal are harmoniously working together to sweep clean the grounds of that little konra forest in which majestically sits the huge black granite Siva Dakshina murthi .
