A special Shanti Homa was performed today from 6:30 to 7:30 this morning in the temple. The ceremony was to invoke peace and stability in the minds of the those who may be disturbed by recent events. The ceremony was coordinated precisely with a Shanti Homa by Sambamurthi Sivachariya at his Kali Amba temple in Chennai, India. along with other pujas in various temples in India.

It was a "Sivaloka Day" on the panchangam and the vibration was unusually high as many prayers were burned and Hindus from the local community joined us.
The monks chanted Sri Rudram as usual followed by special shanti mantras.
After the ceremony Gurudeva gave a powerful talk. He spoke about how recent events have finally made the US understand what many other countries have already been experiencing. So in that sense the positive aspect of our "waking up" to the full problem of terrorism is an important step. Gurudeva gave very clear options in answering the question of "What can we do here on Kauai." He explained that efforts to end domestic violence and the problem of drug use and associated criminial activity has met with little response... but that only means we need to work harder to end the terrorism that goes on right in our own community so that Kauai can become a place of great peace, harmony and a model for the world.
Shankar Nathan and his wife Vidya and daughter Anjali and baby boy Arjun attended the morning homa today after returning from Chennai, India. The family recently moved to Kauai and has been very happy to find our little Saivite monastery here. Acharya Palaniswami talked with them about their experience in Chennai where they helped with our art projects by visiting the painter S. Rajam who has done the covers of some of our books. Shankar and his wife are taking a "sabbatical" from years of working in a high stress world of information techologies. Given world events, they had the good foresight and karma to pick Kauai as a place of refuge for a while.
We gave the family a grand tour of the publication facility. On the walls on the right you see enlarged reproductions of the work of S. Rajam, which you see on the cover of our books.
Except for two people, all of our guests for the monastery tour today live on Kauai. They all attended the first half of the 9am Siva puja and basked in the shanti of Kadavul.
This is the Bali version of "Chakra man" showing the 14 chakras from the feet to the top of the head. Gurudeva has been telling everyone not to let the terrorists succeed in driving us into fear, retaliatory anger and confusion...but to keep consciousness in the higher chakras of reason, will, divine cognition and love. "Yes, keep informed and be alert, but don't let these events take you into the lower emotions."
Meditation on violet lavendar is very uplifting... who designs these things?

Acharya Palaniswami: This next question comes from Tamil Nadu, from Ponnimattur.
Respectful pranams to the Holy Feet of His Holiness Gurudeva. I would like to be enlightened as to the exact significance of karma yoga in Hinduism. Aum.
Gurudeva: Karma yoga can start within the home, within the Temple and almost anywhere. It is selfless service without looking for reward or expecting even acknowledgment of 'thank you'.
If you have a shrine room in your home and you go in quietly and clean it up, without anyone asking you or anyone really knowing that you were the one who did it, that is karma yoga. If someone has to remind you to clean the shrine room and then you do it, with a nice spirit, that is not karma yoga.
Karma yoga is creating good karma that you want to come back to you in the future, by performing physical, mental and emotional service, by volunteering yourself to service.
Often in temples you will see karma yogis pulling the weeds out of the garden. Nobody has asked them to do that, nobody expects them to do that but they are performing this service, unasked and not looking for any appreciation. That is true karma yoga.

Innersearch postponed
Due to the horrific tragedies of September 11th, Himalayan Academy has indefinitely postponed the Canadian Innersearch scheduled to leave next July. Please be assured, we will re-schedule the Innersearch, but only when the present insecurity around the world settles down. Until then, if you are planning to go on a future Innersearch program with Gurudeva, continue to set aside a little income each month in a special fund. |
