Gurudeva said: "You can't work at correcting something. You either do it or you don't do it. You don't work at not falling off a cliff, a big precipice that drops off a hundred feet. You just don't step forward; that's what you don't do! When you come to the point where you hear about the Self, and you get interested in the Self, you're at a point where you can break the cycle of certain karmas through sadhana. You're either going to do it or you're going to think, "Oh, that's kind of silly, you know. It's really nice to listen to Gurudeva, but to actually take these teachings seriously and make changes in my life, wellho hum. That kind of attitude, that kind of ho-hum, lazy attitude, also results in making new karmas, because others look at you as an example and take up your example. It's living a double life that I am talking about. It depends on the strength of the person's soul whether he actually makes some definite changes in his character or not."

Cybertalk: Bodhinatha delves into the nature of awareness, describing that we are not the states of consciousness we experience, rather we are pure awareness that experiences or travels through different areas of the mind.

Rajan and Jayshree from Louisville, Kentucky heard about the monastery from a recent visitor who told them they must visit if they are going to Hawaii.

An update on Praful and Jayshree Patel's Kauaian pilgrimage. This morning after attending the 9am Siva puja they had a wonderful meeting with Bodhinatha where they had many questions answered. The Patels also made some lovely kesari for the monks which we enjoyed at lunch today. They have been coming up every morning to the temple. And in the evening they enjoy the sights of our beautiful island making Kauai the ideal pilgrimage holiday destination!

Here is the Maha Spatika lingam temporarily residing in Kadavul temple, waiting for the completion of Iraivan Temple to take up permanent residence and begin working to channel the shakti of Lord Siva.

Iraivan Wonders

Order sacred rudrakshas. Now beautiful 36-bead malas! And gorgeous 2003 Iraivan calendars with Hindu festival days on them. Great for gifts! All proceeds go to the building fund.

Our silpis are working downwards now on the sides of the temple, putting on final smoothing touches on the joints.

Where two stones meet, if one is slightly higher than another, the whole surface of the higher one is smoothed back from the edge of the joint inward for several inches at a slope that make the transitions between stones almost invisible.

of the raising of the first four Iraivan pillars.
(opens in new window.)

On the pillars are the logos we have used for many years that symbolize the great mission that Gurudeva created. Among them is Hinduism Today, whose logo is carved here. A publication that has networked and unified the thinking of Hindus the world over, playing a leading role in the modern Hindu Renaissance.

Roof beams waiting their turn to go to high places.

The carving you see here, you will see when you look up at the ceiling of the temple.

"Reunion" Satsang

Kulapati Guhan Sivalingam performing the padapuja at Satsang in Malaysia.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Narration from Silvarajoo:
"Church members from all over Malaysia, India and also a couple from USA were at Kuala Lumpur for the Iraivan Temple exhibition. Members from outstation have extended their stay after the Iraivan exhibition to visit other members and relatives homes in Kuala Lumpur and nearby. And when the Malaysian mission held the usual Saturday satsang almost all of them attended.
~~~~~~~~~~~~
It was like festival celebration at the satsang held at Kulapati Silvarajoo Muniandy's home in Sungai Buloh on the evening of February 1, 2003 where almost all Malaysian members including Kulapati and Kulamata Jiva and Kanmini Rajasankara attended. The hall was full to a group of almost 50 devotees.

Aarati being passed to devotees.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The satsang started at 7.00pm for that day as the COM meeting was also held on the same day from 4.30pm to 7.00pm. Kulapati Guhan Sivalingam, the padipalar of the day performed the Ganesha aarati and then led the group in chanting Gurudeva Namaskara Veda Mantra. Then he performed the pada puja to Gurudeva's tiruvadi invoking the presence of God, Gods, Guru and the devas that lasted for about one hour. After the pada puja a short Shum meditation session was held led by the pechalar of the day, kulapati Murugesu Kandasamy.
Devotees receiving the vibuthi prasadam
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
"Then our elder, Kulapati Kuppusamy Appasamy, gave a welcome speech in which he commented that this is the largest gathering in Malaysia of members, Kulapatis and Kulamatas for a normal satsang since many years. He then requested Kulapatis Jiva Rajasankara and Thanabalan Ganesan, and Ramesh Sivanathan, the only member in East Malaysia to tell a few words on their great thondus at their respective places.

"All present applauded their services to Gurudeva and the Church.

Then all present were served to dinner.

A few members said that they were so happy to have gathered for this satsang and one of the kulamatas told me that during the satsang she had a rare experience of a somewhat near superconscious level during meditation. She said that she is not going in detail but she is thankful for that experience."

Kauai Land and Water Development

The waterways of our island are precious and a key to the beauty and future of Kauai Aadheenam. With Gurudeva's blessings Sannyasin Arumugaswami has been participating in the East Kauai Water Cooperative that is an historic body in the sense that a citizens group has successfully taken over management of a large irrigation system-- a function normally reserved by government or big business.

The Wailua River has historically been one of Kauai's greatest tourist attraction. Here we are looking down over the rive not far from the ocean which is off to the right.

The Fern Grotto cruise boats come up the South Fork of the Wailua River and dock near the Grotto. The Grotto is off to the right about 200 feet from this vantage point on the spillway of Reservoir 21 on the water system now being managed by the East Kauai Water Cooperative. The reservoir is about 100 feet to the rear. Water percolates from the reservoir through the rocks to the grotto area.

The Grotto has existed for many years, developing during a period of heavier rainfall prior to the mid-20th century. In the last decades, however, it has been dependent upon the water from Reservoir 21, which is now being restored. At one time visits to the Grotto were the top tourist attraction for the entire island.

Reservoir 21 is only partially full at this time. It sits at the end of many miles of ditch bringing water to 2,500 acres of agriculture land. When the sugar company ceased operations, this ditch system was shut down. Within a few months the ferns in Fern Grotto dried up and died off. After the Water Cooperative took over the system, the water flow was restored, and half the walls of Fern Grotto became wet again. The ferns are slowly coming back. The purpose of this trip was to understand the relationship between the reservoir and the grotto.

Those taking part in the field trip including, from left to right, Leland Nishek of Kauai Nursery and Landscaping, being hired to restore the ferns; Kaleo Smith, of Smith's Boats, the main tour operator to the Grotto; Tony Branco, manager for the Coop; Les Milnes, field manager for the Coop; Maryanne Kusaka, former Mayor of Kauai; Natarajnathaswami and Arumugaswami who is behind the camera.

The team stands on the concrete spillway of Reservoir 21, which drops off over a hundred feet into the river valley. Everyone is confident that we can work to get the water to fully restore the Grotto to its former magical condition.

Meanwhile back at the Aadheenam, one of the many ubiquitous lizards that abound... Their chirps are said to be omens of various sorts, one of which is to confirm a thought or idea just voiced...
