Gurudeva taught that the unfoldment of the soul could be likened to the lotus flower. Starting out in the mud beneath the waters, reaching up for the sun, finally a bud, then a blossom. He also said that spiritual unfoldment could be described as the progressive stabilization of awareness in the higher chakras and the classic picture of the crown chakra is a 1000 petaled lotus.

Looking out from the sanctum of Kadavul one sees the homa in progress. In the distance the large Nandi bull and Gurudeva's tall, life-size picture painted by Indra Sharma hanging on the back of the temple.
The monks chant Sri Rudram in front of Lord Murugan.
Many prayers were offered.
Agni, the Messenger, consumes the prayers...
...and lifts them into the inner worlds.
We had a busy retreat, as usual. One activity was an outing to the National Tropical Botanical Garden on the south side of Kauai near Poipu. It is located not far from the ocean and what a spectacular view there is of the southern seas.
Paramacharya Palaniswami said they had a huge lotus pond.
We also are trying to grow lotuses at the Aadheenam and it was an inspiring vision to see how it could be.
This is a Morton Bay Fig Tree from Australia. The buttressed root system can take up a thirty-foot diameter area.
The lotus bud. We were surprised when the tour guide who was describing everything to visitors, including tourists from the mainland, launched into a description of the way lotuses are used to depict the inner chakras and that the growth of the lotus flower is likened to the unfoldment of the soul.
Opening up to the sun, just as the soul eventually does to receive the grace of God.
Full bloom
The lotus seed pod that remains after the flower falls away
Another unusual innovation over the retreat was the harvesting of our own wood for lumber. The opportunity literally fell in our lap when a giant Blue Gum Eucalyptus tree fell over along the path of San Marga.
We called in an expert who has a portable saw mill to do the job.
This is basically a horizontal band saw with very precise controls over the depth of cut. It can slice off as little as 1/8 of an inch from a long board with perfect accuracy.
Logs are locked into place and the band saw moves backward, taking off a slice at a time.
We were able to rescue 1400 board feet of lumber from the tree, worth an estimated US $5,000.00
