One of the great saints of Saivism is Tayumanavar. Long ago we had his works translated into English, and we are presently preparing to post these to the web. Here is one example of his songs, this one about the Guru:

"Thou camest as the Silent Teacher mine,
Ready to grant all boons however rare,
And with a mother's love Thou didst unfold
Decking my head with those Blessed Feet of Thine,
The Eternal Law of wisdom's ecstasy.

Our Beloved and Revered Satguru Sivaya Subramuniyaswami
Attained Maha Samadhi on November 12th, 2001

Tayumanavar continued:

Bereft of thought or holy word revolved
The superconscious Vision beyond all thought
Of Freedom's final state as one or two,
As Light or Void or Form or Primal Sound.
Such is Beatitude. So hast Thou taught.
Grant me thy Grace, O Lord, to live that life
Wherein are steeped time honoured lovers thine.
O Thou Siddhanta's Goal and Prime Essence!
O Dakshinamurti that dost shine aloft
On Trichy's hill, O master of Wisdom's Bliss!"

Title: Yama #7 - Daya, Compassion

Category: Yamas and Niyamas

Duration: 10 minutes, 30 seconds

Date Given: April 24, 2003

Date Posted: June_11_2003

Given by: Bodhinatha

Cybertalk: Yama number 7 - daya, compassion. Compassion is conquering cruelty. It is the outgrowth of love. Bodhinatha explains he difference beween ahimsa and daya. Part of compassion is the desire to help someone. The Tirukural uses the word "arul" for compassion. Arul also means grace. Compassion is hardest for people we do not like. Properly caring for animals when young helps children cultivate compassion, preparing them to care for people when they are older.

It is a quiet day at the Aadheenam. After our busy outdoor ashram sadhana day, all the monks are back at their regular duties.

We bring you today a sample sketch from a new artist we have found who works in a slightly more contemporary style than our other artists. Paramacharya Palaniswami sent him a simple note asking for "an 11-year-old boy with his 7-year-old sister performing puja at a home shrine or in a forest with Ganesha and Murugan standing nearby," and he sent back this delightful preliminary sketch for a painting. The artist is S. Achariya. This will eventually be transformed into a painting and then a cover for our Saivite Hindu Religion children's course.

Title: Is it an Error to Meditate?
Category: Meditation and Yoga
Duration: 2 min., 40 seconds
Date Given: February 5, 1999
Given by: Gurudeva

Today at Kauai Aadheenam, February 5th. Greetings to everyone in cyberspace from our Cyberspace Ashram, on the internet.

The question comes up occasionally, "Isn't it selfish to pay attention to oneself, to sit quietly in meditation and read religious books?"

Well, the obvious answer is - No, it is not selfish at all. What is selfish is sitting for two or three hours in front of the TV not talking to anyone, emoting over various scenes, pictures and scripts that someone has worked out to attract your attention. That is selfish. Another thing that is selfish is pouting and controlling other people by your moods and emotions. That is selfish.

Working with your self within yourself, to conquer your self, to conquer your moods and emotions so that you are always nice, always peaceful, always helpful - that is not selfish. That is very unselfish because you are improving yourself and everyone around you. Many people try to straighten out everyone else according to their standards, an impossible dream, an impossible occupation and results are nil. But by working on yourself, just by sitting for a half-hour every day, twenty minutes even, that is unselfish. Because, you are accomplishing a great deal.

I hope this answers that question once and for all. It keeps coming up time and time again. I think it is only an excuse, because sitting alone, looking at you through your own eyes is a difficult thing to do.

Our Cyberspace Ashram is gaining a lot of strength and several who have been tuning in through the internet, have decided to go to Alaska. The Alaskan Innersearch from Vancouver, Canada to Anchorage where we are going to be blessing and placing a beautiful Ganesha Deity for the Hindu community there, beginning a temple which will come up in three or four years. Welcome aboard! Welcome aboard!

Be back again tomorrow on February 6th.
