Title: Yama #8 - Arjava, Honesty |
Cybertalk: Yama number 8 - arjava, honesty. Part of the reason for these talks is that there is a high demand in Malaysia. We need to harness the tendency to be great through breaking the rules or laws. In Kauai's jail the warden teaches the inmates that honest actions have positive reactions and dishonest actions have negative reactions. Sometimes parents teach their children it is good to be dishonest in life and business. Bodhinatha gives tips on how to be more honest. Bribery is also dishonest. The most important rule is to be honest to oneself.

What a mangalam day! Vaikasi Visakam, which began this morning with Muruga Abhishekam.
Our attempts at long exposure to get some light at this early hour... Saravananathaswami and Sadhaka Jivanandanatha perform the puja.
Devotees sing bhajans while the Deity is decorated.
Everyone waits for the moment of darshan of the beautiful murthi of Lord Muruga in Kadavul temple.
Vetri Vel Muruganakku! Haro Hara! Alankara deepam arati....
It was, as always, an uplifting moment.
"To attain even the permission to perform yoga one must have the grace of Lord Ganesha and the grace of Lord Muruga. Lord Muruga is the God of the kundalini, of the advanced yogic practices. Unfoldment all happens within the kundalini and the chakras within our subtle bodies. Once a profound relationship is developed with Lord Muruga, then with the guru's permission and guidance, true yoga may commence. Otherwise, no matter how long one sits in meditation, no matter how hard one tries, it is just sitting, it is just trying. There is no fire there, no shakti, no power, no change. It is the Gods who control the fire and at this stage help the devotee immensely, bringing him closer and closer to the supreme God, Siva. Quite often the yogi in his deep internalized state may see in vision the feet or form of God Siva before he begins to blend into the mind of God Siva, called Satchidananda. It is God and Gods in form that help us to find the formless God. "
"The Gods are the controllers of these force centers within man. They live in the innermost areas of form. To enter the muladhara chakra, the aspirant must go through Lord Ganesha. And when the aspirant progresses to the manipura chakra, Ganesha will introduce him to Lord Muruga. Once this is accomplished, the devotee will worship Lord Muruga as the Be-All and End-of-All, just as Ganesha was worshiped when consciousness was in His chakras. Lord Muruga is the controller of the manipura chakra, the chakra of willpower, and the two chakras above it, direct cognition and universal love. Now we can begin to see that the aspirant has to proceed in consciousness through the three chakras that Lord Muruga controls and meet all the tests before this God will introduce him to Lord Siva. Lord Siva's realm is chakras number six, seven and beyond. The aspirant still must go completely through the chakras of Lord Siva's realm to become Sivaness--to experience His all-pervasiveness, and on into the essence of all essences, Parasiva." --Gurudeva
"Siva's followers all believe in the Mahadeva Karttikeya, Son of Siva-Shakti, whose vel of grace dissolves the bondages of ignorance. The yogi, locked in lotus, venerates Murugan. Thus restrained, his mind becomes calm. Aum."

Our tour day guests...
Today a wonderful Jain family came to attend the 9am Siva puja and then tour our new Iraivan Temple site and grounds. Naren Mehta, his wife Devila and son Aanand live in Edmonton, Canada, and are visiting Hawaii for the first time. The did not even know we were here until someone in a local Kauai store directed them up to our monastery. They were thrilled to be here. They were especially interested in the meaning of the Shum language carvings on the Iraivan Temple pillars, and also enjoyed the rudraksha trees, including hugging a tree to release all cares and worries.

Current Overview |
A touch of moisture on our camera lens give a surreal look to the temple. The mukha mandapam has had all its sand removed from the inside now.
One day you will be looking inside here at the puja in progress. The central sanctum is still sealed and filled with sand and will remain so until the vimanam is complete.
Looking out from inside the mukha mandapam.
This sand is the "sub-floor" of the area around the sanctum which will be covered with floor stones.
Pillars are joyfully standing in the sun, looking forward to stone roof beams to come.
Our Siddhidata Kulam has been working hard on a new scaffolding and tent to serve the new team of silpis who will be working way up on top of the temple.
Lord Siva on the pillar and Dakshinamurthi in the background.
Three of the monks are also carving stones during the silpis absence, keeping the temple stone work in an unending mode... so that the devas will hear daily the "clink, clink" of steel on granite.
Walking back from the temple we take a turn toward the Orchid Mandapam and go by our flag.
This is one of the most breathtaking spots at the Aadheenam. Little do people know what they will see once they get inside....
And then look out over the Wailua river valley. It is impossible for a camera to capture the panorama from this place. The Wailua river is calm today as she gently flows to merge with the Pacific Ocean.

Title: Controlling the Instinctive Mind
Category: Meditation and Yoga
Duration: 4 min., 18 seconds
Date Given: February 6, 1999
Given By: Gurudeva
Today at Kauai Aadheenam, February 6th. Our Cyberspace Ashram doors are open to you. Welcome!
Today, we are having a large group from Japan come. They are Japanese New Age people. They are interested in our 700-hundred pound, beautiful, six-sided, perfect, multi-million year old crystal and they are interested in the Sanatana Dharma, Hinduism, the laws of karma, the laws of reincarnation. *And* They are wondering, "Where is the New Age going? Where is it leading us?" We will tell you more about our experience with them tomorrow.
We are doing a sadhana here through cyberspace, and that is just sitting quietly for at least twenty minutes a day, preferably at the same time. We are training the instinctive mind. We have three stages of the mind - instinctive, intellectual and superconscious. The superconscious mind is perfect; it is the mind of the soul. The intellectual mind can be imperfect depending on how we are educated. Whether we are educated according to eternal truths on the planet, or all kinds of *other* ideas and opinions of other people, picked up by the intellect and repeated even if they are not understood. The instinctive mind runs the functions of the body. That is the animal within us and we are going to tame that animal by sitting quietly at least twenty minutes a day, preferably at the same time.
How many people say, "When I do that, my mind just goes crazy! I think all kinds of thoughts." That is alright. Think all kinds of thoughts.
Think about this. You are looking at a television and you are thinking all kinds of things and feeling all kinds of emotions. But, there is a light coming out through the screen that makes the pictures possible to see. Now that light is not concerned with the pictures. That light is not concerned with the emotions that the pictures stir within you. That light is the light of the soul and that is the same light that can be thought of as your inner light, the light of your mind that lights up the pictures of your mind.
So, as the mind races from one subject to another, one picture to another, be aware more of the light. Now it may take a month or two before you are able to do this but keep listening to this one particular talk I am giving today. It gives you the key to controlling the instinctive mind, and once the instinctive mind is under your control, that means under the control of your soul, spiritual advancement is assured. Spiritual advancement is assured. When you are sitting quietly for twenty minutes, preferably at the same time, don't move a muscle. Don't wiggle. Don't blink. Just breathe and observe the light that is lighting up your many, many, many thoughts.
That is it for today, everyone.
