"Nobody can think of Siva in His formlessness. This, above all, has to be realized, and then the realizer has to realize that he has realized the Formless. The truth is that precious few will realize Parasiva, though many can and will realize Satchidananda, even in their later years or at the moment of death. The fullness of lives of experience experienced, the performance of prior goals perfected, would lead a soul to the burning desire to accomplish the ultimate goal. For each person on the planet, the immediate pattern is clear. Once it is fulfilled, the next step appears naturally. It is the same force of desire that accomplishes all of this. The desire of a mother to take care of her children and to be a good wife, the desire of the father to support his family, the desire of a scientist to discover, the desire of an athlete to excel, the desire of the yogi to merge in oneness with Siva--it is the same force of desire, transmuted through the chakras as they awaken, as the soul evolves. It is that same desire that finally draws the seeker to know That which is timeless and formless, That which is spaceless and causeless. Be patient. It comes in the course of time to all. It comes. It will come. Be patient. "

Bodhinatha's Sun One Video. Most Recent update: June 8, 2003, Bodhinatha speaks on Siddhanta Shravana, Scriptural Listening, Niyama #6.

Study and listen to learned people and our primary scriptures, the Vedas and Upanishads and other holy texts. This guides us to become more spiritual people. But it is listening, more than reading, that is meant by this practice, for listening is more powerful. As Yogaswami said, "It is not in books, you fool!" Rather it is through hearing that the more subtle forms of knowledge are passed from the knower to the listener, from the teacher to the student. This happens most potently when the speaker has had spiritual experiences.
Bodhinatha continues with a second subject on the importance of the Guru in our religious lives.

Cybertalk: Part 1 of 7 - Bodhinatha gives a class during Guru Purnima on the role of the guru. The guru has five major tasks, to provide encouragement to keep striving, help us develop a spiritual self-concept, speak the teachings, improve our behavior by helping us focus on our weakest areas, provide initiation to quicken unfoldment. In this class we will focus on the guru's task of improving our behavior by giving us guidelines for how we as a spiritual person should behave. One of the ways we can do this is through an annual review of the yamas and niyamas and seeing how we can further refine them.

It was also the last day of the visit of Natarajnathaswami's family. Here he is with our mother, Virginia... the mother of each of the monks is the mother of all of us... we are so lucky to have all these wonderful Ammas! Virginia is in her eighties but still going strong and is bright as a light bulb.

And here are brothers Richard and Jeff with their wives and children. Everyone really enjoyed their long visit here and we all hope you come to Kauai again soon.

Swami asked them all what was the single most impressive experienced of being here. They thought for a while, then all said, "The harmony among all the monks...."

Title: Hatha Yoga
Category: Meditation and Yoga
Duration: 3 min., 17 seconds

Today at Kauai Aadheenam. April 14th.

We have a question from San Diego, California. "Is this a correct concept that forward bends during Hatha Yoga bring up anger and resentment?"

Well, Hatha Yoga releases the nerve force within the individual. That is what it does. It releases blockages within the subconscious state of the mind, as well as relaxation to the physical body. For nasty people, many things can bring up anger. For nice people, many things can bring up a feeling of bliss and happiness and relaxation. It all depends upon who the person is. There is no right, no wrong. I would say that, if it did bring up anger in somebody, if they bend forward and release some hidden impressions, then the person should do Vasana Daha Tantra, which means writing down all their feelings and burning it up, burning up the piece of paper. Or, not do Hatha Yoga. Hope this helps answer that question. There is a big 'Yoga Day' in San Diego with over a hundred yoga teachers and this came up in the meeting.

kam-sat-yam-ne. Mountain-top consciousness, looking at your mind from a higher state of consciousness. When you look at your mind from a lower state of consciousness, it seems vast, complex, complicated and awesome. But, from a higher state of consciousness, it feels simple, possibly fluid and you get the feeling that you are able to adjust your state of consciousness, that is the lower one. Yes, you can.

We have been working on sim-shum-be-see. ka-eef. kam-sat-yam-ne. Lifting up the energy in the body to the chest and the head, and looking in meditation at the lower mind. This is a wonderful meditation and it will bring you along the spiritual path a few more inches than you already have been coming along. Every little technique helps just a little bit, even if you practice it for a very short time.

Now, we are moving into another language French and Malay. Tomorrow and the next day, we will be on retreat, here at Kauai Aadheenam, reflecting on yesterday and the days before that and then reflecting on tomorrow and tomorrows after that. So, in about 3 days, we will be back again. Our doors will be open.
