It's a quiet day at Kauai Aadheenam.... here is a little story about how things develop over time. Years ago, in 1990, Gurudeva was contacted by some young people in Chicago, looking for official answers to questions they were getting from their American peers. He answered them and later we posted these on the net as "Nine Questions" which has since become a famous part of our Hindu Basics web site. Now we are expanding this materials to include the hot topic of the caste system, and these ten questions will be published in an educational section of Hinduism Today.

We are pleased to announce the web release of Satguru Sivaya Subramuniyaswami's monumental work on Hindu culture and lifestyle:
Living with Siva.

This is all part of the on-going process Bodhinatha has instigated to get the teachings out in digestible forms for those who are teaching Hinduism to the next generation and to the communities around them.

Bodhinatha's Sun One Video. Most Recent update: September 12, 2003. Bodhinatha speaks on Ahimsa, noninjury, yama #1, which is noninjury in thought, word and deed. The law of karma decrees that it is wise not to harm or hurt others, for we will then receive harm and hurt in exchange in the future. 12 minutes, 29 seconds.

On of the questions young Hindus get over and over and over again, with eyes rolling: Why do Hindus worship cows?

Well, you can read about it on the net at: "Question Four: why do Hindus regard the cows as sacred?"

The short answer: "The cow represents the giving nature of life to every Hindu. Honoring this gentle animal, who gives more than she takes, we honor all creatures."

So we take you now to our own dear Chaturthi. Chaturthi is a very, very intelligent cow and she is a bit lonely now as she has no other cows around at the moment. She actually thinks she may be part human, having attached herself as a baby more to the monks who cared for her. Here she is ears up in expectation of the arrival of Sadhaka Tejadevanatha who takes care of milking her on Sun 1 morning.

Oh! who is that be hind me now.... she turns to check out Sthapati who is walking in for the day's duty at the temple site. Chaturthi plants herself firmly in the middle of the road and makes it quite clear that we must pay some attention to her, pet her and show some affection otherwise she will be very sad...

Sthapati poses for our camera man, Thambynathan Girish Samugam behind the shutter today....

On the wall of the small milking barn, Sannyasin Natarajnathaswami, at Gurudeva's request, painted this lovely cow image.

The Prime Directive is FOOD! Ha, time for alfalfa cubes and sweet corn and other delicious grains we feed her at milking time. She stands patiently at the stantion waiting to be let in.

Sadhaka arranges the milking equipment.

This stainless steel container will gather the milk.

Chaturthi heads in for the grain in the bucket and stands contentedly while Sadhaka connects up her udder...

A bit of disinfectant first to give her a wash...

Then the machine does the rest of the work which was done in olden times by hand.

Chaturthi seems hardly aware of being milked, so intent is she on the sweet grain and all the personal attention.

Afterwards Sadhaka pours out the milk to then take it to the kitchen, then washes and sterilizes the equipment before leaving.

Meanwhile Chaturthi has stationed herself next to the E-Z-Go to be sure to get one last pat on the head before Girish heads on back to the monastery.

She is a very lovely cow. Another cow we had years ago, Lakshmi, now deceased, used to perk up her ears and shed tears if you sang "Aum Namah Sivaya, Aum Namah Sivaya" softly to her... seriously, that's the truth... I did it myself!

Job done, Sadhaka is on his way back.

Ready for yogurt! Thank you, Chaturthi! She is a very contented cow, with open range to feed on.

Indian Ocean Monastery
Gurudeva's spiritual center in the island country of Mauritius
in the Indian Ocean near South Africa

As usual, the November Homa hosted by Kulapaties Valaytan, Moonesawmy and Pareatumbee in Flacq was another wonderful spiritual event at the Park. Devotees were seated early morning in the Ganesha Mandapam

Four Church members from the Flacq kutumbas sat at the four sides of the Homa.

In the meantime the ladies and youth are singing devotional songs to build up the spiritual vibration.

Lord Pancha Mukha Ganapathi is overseeing all that is going on inside the Mandapam...

After the Homa and arathi to Lord Pancha Mukha Ganapati, every prostrates to the murthi and then receives vibuthi and other blessed puja prasadam. We have a new generation of very young Brahmacharis now coming up in Mauritius. They are all happy to be given responsibilities during the Homa ceremony.

A small crowd of devotees outside after the ceremony.

This is the Rosemeelah family. Poonam on the right and her sisters are regular devotees attending the Homa every month. She is enrolling into the Academy for the Master Course.

The shade of the mango grove is an ideal place to serve cooked prasadum to devotees...
