Hibiscus Propagation for Temple Needs

With two temples now functioning simultaneously, we need more flowers for pujas and decoration. At certain times of year we’ve had plenty of flowers on our property to cover all needs, but during occasional droughts or when temperatures cool or fluctuate, production can fall drastically. Therefore we need more plants, to provide adequate supply even during downturns. Toward this end we are identifying the more prolific types of hibiscus, such as the one in the first photo, and propagating cuttings. The rest of the photos show some of the new plantings.

Annual Founder Event–Day Three

We started the day with Rudram, a short puja and chanting Gurudeva ashtottara. This time we were joined by two Sivacharya priests who will be conducting the main mahasamadhi puja tomorrow. A third priest arrived later in the day.

Later in the morning, Satguru gave a upadesha to the small group of pilgrims, and in the afternoon pilgrims attended our bi-weekly Pradosha Puja at Iraivan Temple. The just-arrived third priest, Arun, joined in from the start and the others participated later when we came into the garbhagriha.

The Nature of Thought, Part One

Satguru Bodhinatha Veylanswami gives his weekly upadesha in Kadavul Temple at Kauai’s Hindu Monastery in Hawaii. It is part of a series of talks elaborating on the inspired teachings of Satguru Śivaya Subramuniyaswami as found in his book Merging With Śiva.

“The mystic, while in the beginning stages, tries diligently through his sādhana to extract his awareness from the thinking area of the mind while simultaneously trying to perceive without thinking about what he has perceived. It is the overview of what has been perceived that the mystic endeavors to superconsciously grasp in a series of flashes. He well knows that thinking is the more externalized strata. The mystic constantly, through every waking moment and even during sleep, endeavors to strengthen his acute observation through perceiving the overview of thought strata rather than thinking through them. My guru often said, “There is a chair at the top. Sit in it and look at the world from that perspective.” The mystic constantly sits in this chair, looking at mind from the threshold of the Absolute.”

Five Steps to Enlightenment, Part Two

Satguru Bodhinatha Veylanswami gives his weekly upadesha in Kadavul Temple at Kauai’s Hindu Monastery in Hawaii. It is part of a series of talks elaborating on the inspired teachings of Satguru Śivaya Subramuniyaswami as found in his book Merging With Śiva.

“The Self is so simple. You have to be so simple to realize the Self, not simple-minded, but so unattached. Awareness has to be able to move so nimbly through the mind, like a graceful deer going through the forest, so deftly through the mind, that none of the sticky substance of the mind, so to speak, sticks onto awareness and holds it steadfast for a period of time. And only with that agility can you move awareness in quickly to the Source, in on itself, until you come out having realized the Self. It is an experience you come out of more than go into.

Upcoming Hinduism Today Story

One of the stories being assembled for the next issue of Hinduism Today, January 2025, is the traveling outdoor art exhibition called the Great Elephant Migration.
It is created by Elephant Family USA, a charity that works to protect Asian wildlife. One hundred life-size elephant sculptures are traveling across the USA over a one year, one month period to raise awareness and funds for conservation projects. The elephants are made of Lantana camara, the second most invasive species in the world which is toxic to humans and elephants. This fast-growing shrub has taken over 40% of forests in India, thus diminishing food sources for animals and forcing them to seek sustenance in urban areas. Stay tuned for the full story.
