Tomato Update!

Aum.

It's been a little over a month from our planting blessing in our new greenhouse and we already can see our first burgeoning bunches of beautiful tomatoes. Today these happy plants received a trim off their lower leaves, allowing natural sunlight to reach the fruits. The direct light will help increase enzymatic activity in the fruits, degrading acids and enhancing sweetness. Not long and our monks will be enjoying these wonderful tomatoes with their meals. Jai!

For those not familiar with growing tomatoes on Kauai – it is impossible with our fruit fly problem in an “open” garden. We have tried for years. That is why when you leave the island you must go through agricultural inspectors – no one wants this persistent pest introduced to their state or country. You may get a crop of cherry tomatoes or some Roma tomatoes if you are lucky. Otherwise, as the tomato plants begins to fruit the young tomatoes are “stung” (The fruit fly lay hundreds of eggs that hatch into larvae in mere hours ) and soon spoil. The fruit fly is all-pervasive in Hawaii and a severe impediment to the full potential of Kauai and Hawaii as a major producer of produce. There have been heroic efforts to irradiate this crop killer to no avail. To see this abundance of healthy tomatoes is mind-boggling to a Hawaii resident. The sophistication of this greenhouse is another mind-expanding experience. If you look at the control panel you may think you are aboard the starship Enterprise! Watching each of our monks master their area of service and expression it is easy to see previous lifetimes of mastery in the world before they set their supreme focus within.
